Naples Adventure Tours: Prices and DIY Options
Guided or do it yourself?
Most adventure tours sold in Naples have a do-it-yourself version, and the gap in price can be large. Sometimes the tour is worth it for the transport, the guiding or the boat. Sometimes you are paying for a minibus to a place a train reaches. Here are the main options by price band, with the DIY cost alongside.
Under EUR20: underground Naples
The cheapest guided adventure in the city is also the one with no DIY version. Napoli Sotterranea takes you 40 metres under the old centre, down 136 steps, into the cisterns and tunnels the Greeks and Romans dug into the soft tufa rock, and into shelters used in the Second World War bombing. The visit lasts about 90 minutes and costs roughly EUR12 to EUR15.
Tours leave hourly from 10:00 to 18:00, in Italian and English, from Piazza San Gaetano 69. Parties of fewer than 10 need no booking, so this is a flexible fill-in for a wet afternoon. Times are on the official Napoli Sotterranea page . Resellers also list it, and you can see underground tours on Viator , though a small party can simply turn up.
EUR10 plus transport: Vesuvius
Going alone, the volcano costs EUR10 for the crater ticket (EUR8 under 25) plus a booking fee, and the train and shuttle from Naples on top. Tickets are sold online only, by timed slot and in your name, with no sales at the mountain; book on the Vesuvius National Park page . A guided tour adds door-to-door transport and someone to explain the 79 AD eruption. Pay for that if your time in Naples is short; otherwise the DIY route is the cheaper one.
EUR85 to EUR160: a Capri boat day
A shared full-day boat trip from Naples to Capri usually runs EUR85 to EUR160 a person, with a cruise around the coast, the Faraglioni rocks, stops for swimming and free time on the island. Compare departures and inclusions with a GetYourGuide search for Capri boat trips .
The DIY version: the hydrofoil from Molo Beverello costs about EUR21 to EUR30 each way, so EUR42 to EUR60 return, and the Blue Grotto adds about EUR18 to EUR19 in cash. That brings a DIY day to roughly EUR60 to EUR80 before lunch, but without the boat ride around the island. The slow Caremar ferry starts at about EUR14 each way if time matters less than money. Remember that the Blue Grotto closes in rough seas and normally in winter.
EUR700 and up: a private speedboat
A private speedboat for a day along the Gulf of Naples or the Amalfi Coast costs roughly EUR700 to EUR1,800 or more. Shared among a group it becomes reasonable; for two people it is a splurge.
Free: the Posillipo coast on foot
Not every adventure needs a ticket. From the hill of Posillipo you can walk down past cliffside villas to Marechiaro, a small fishing hamlet, and look into the clear water of the Gaiola reserve, where Roman villa foundations lie just under the surface. Guided kayak tours paddle over them, at prices set by each operator, but the walk itself costs nothing. Ride a EUR1.30 bus up and walk down.
Money tips
- Ignore touts selling “skip-the-line” vouchers outside Pompei Scavi station. Official Vesuvius and Pompeii tickets are sold online.
- A single ANM bus or funicular ride is EUR1.30 and a metro ride EUR1.50, enough to reach Molo Beverello or the old centre.
- Zip phones and wallets away on Circumvesuviana platforms and in Piazza Garibaldi.
