Nature Spots Near Antwerp: Coast and Heath

The North Sea coast
The coast at Ostend (1h34-1h45, €18-27 one way) is the big-scenery day: wide beaches, a working seafront, and dunes that shift right down to the tideline. The draw here is the openness after days of narrow city streets, plus fresh seafood and the salt air. Ride the Kusttram along the shore to reach quieter dune stretches and the belle-epoque villages between the resorts. Late spring through early autumn is the window; the front is bleak and wind-scoured in winter.
Kalmthoutse Heide
North of the city, the Kalmthoutse Heide is a cross-border heath reserve where the standout sight is the heather itself: in late summer the whole expanse turns purple, threaded with sandy paths and pine stands. It is a birdwatcher’s spot too, and free to enter. Time a visit for August into early September for the bloom, and you get the reserve’s best face.
Hoge Kempen forest
Over in Limburg, Hoge Kempen is Belgium’s national park, a broad sweep of pine forest, heath, and old quarry lakes with viewpoints that open over the treetops. It is the furthest of these spots from Antwerp, a train toward Genk plus a local connection, so it suits a full day out rather than a quick visit (verify current connections). What you come for is scale and quiet: the largest continuous stretch of nature in this region.
The Scheldt beyond the city
Closer in, the Scheldt itself is worth following out of town, where the river broadens into tidal banks and polder edges that draw waterbirds. It is a gentler, cheaper nature fix than a full day trip, and it pairs with the free left-bank crossing at Antwerp.
Best-season summary
Aim the coast and Hoge Kempen at the roughly May-to-September stretch, and the Kalmthoutse Heide at late summer for the heather. Off-season, stick to the city parks instead of a long cold ride.
