Two trips out of Las Vegas are worth planning as overnights rather than rushed single days, and one combination of shorter drives works well strung together over two days instead.
Grand Canyon South Rim: build in the night
Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim sits 280 miles from Las Vegas, 4.5 to 5 hours one-way, 9 to 10 hours of driving round trip. The National Park Service is explicit that hiking from the rim to the river and back in a single day is not something to attempt. A 2-day Red Rock and Valley of Fire loop
Red Rock Canyon, 17 miles west, and Valley of Fire, 55 miles northeast, sit close enough to combine into a 2-day loop rather than two separate rushed day trips: one day for Red Rock’s 13-mile Scenic Drive and Calico Tanks Trail, a second for Valley of Fire’s Fire Wave and White Domes Trail. Mount Charleston as a cooler stopover
35 miles northwest, elevations from 7,500 to nearly 12,000 feet keep temperatures 20 to 30 degrees below the Strip. A night here breaks up a longer itinerary, with summer hiking and winter skiing at Lee Canyon Ski Resort.
