Planning Several Days in Kuala Lumpur
Three days is enough to cover Kuala Lumpur’s city core without rushing; a fourth and fifth day, added as an overnight in Melaka, extends the trip without cramming in a second rushed city.
Days 1: icons and skyline
Book a Petronas Twin Towers slot 3-6 weeks ahead through eticket.petronastwintowers.com.my ; non-Malaysian weekday tickets run RM 127, and the towers close Mondays, so check the calendar first. The visit covers the Skybridge on levels 41-42 and the Observation Deck on level 86. Walk KLCC Park afterward, cross the elevated skybridge to Bukit Bintang, and climb Menara KL’s Sky Deck before dinner along Jalan Alor’s food stalls.
Day 2: temples and heritage
Morning in Chinatown for Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Sin Sze Si Ya Temple and the Kwai Chai Hong murals, then Central Market’s fixed-price batik. Follow the River of Life boardwalk to Masjid Jamek and photograph the Sultan Abdul Samad Building from Merdeka Square. Day 3: caves and the federal capital
A morning KTM Komuter reaches Batu Caves in 30-35 minutes (RM 2.60); the Tamil Hindu shrine’s Cathedral Cave is free, and the 272 steps need shoulders and knees covered. Putrajaya is 18 minutes away by KLIA Transit in the afternoon (RM 14), for the pink Putra Mosque and a lake gondola cruise. End with rooftop drinks looking back at the illuminated skyline.
Days 4-5: an overnight in Melaka
An express bus from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan reaches Melaka Sentral in about 2 hours (RM 10-15), bookable through easybook.com ; there’s no railway station in town, so the bus is the direct route. Compare Melaka hotels on Booking.com for a night along the Malacca River, then spend the time at Dutch Square, St. Paul’s Hill, A Famosa and the Jonker Street night market. On day 5, the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum and Cheng Hoon Teng Temple fill the morning before the bus back.
The verdict
