Planning Several Days in Luxembourg
Luxembourg spans roughly 82 km by 57 km, so several days here means walking a long trail, cycling a river path or staying in one base. Public transport costs nothing in second class (see mobiliteit.lu ), so a base in the capital reaches almost every trailhead. This page lists those options from longest to shortest.
Long-distance walking
Eislek Trail. The official route is 107.29 km in five stages, from Kautenbach in Luxembourg to La Roche-en-Ardenne in Belgium. The Lee and Escapardenne trails add more stages in the north, and one regional brochure puts the combined distance near 158 km over eight stages. Treat that number as a guide and confirm it locally.
Mullerthal Trail. About 112 km of waymarked paths form three loops, each of which the official pages suggest splitting into two days. Route 2 (39.7 km) connects Echternach, Berdorf, Mullerthal and Scheidgen and includes the Kuelscheier rock passage and the Wollefsschlucht. Route 3 (37.7 km) links Mullerthal, Blumenthal, Larochette and Beaufort. Five ExtraTours between 9.3 and 31.5 km can be added. Check hunting dates on the trail map, since hunters are out from mid-October to January or February. See the Mullerthal route page .
In the north and east, keep to waymarked paths and leave any metal objects in fields or woods alone, as wartime munitions still turn up.
Cycling
The PC 3 cycle path follows the Moselle, Sure and Our for roughly 90 km from Schengen to Vianden, according to a tourism listing. Use a current map to check the distance and surface.
A three day stay from the capital
A short break needs no special tour. One easy plan: spend the first day on the old town and the Bock Casemates, the second on Vianden and the third on the Moselle or the Mullerthal. The Luxembourg 4 day itinerary fills in the days. Trier is about 50 minutes away by hourly regional train and Metz about 45 to 55 minutes, both rough figures. Bastogne, in Belgium, is roughly an hour by FlixBus. Anything across the border needs a paid ticket for the part beyond it.
Accommodation
Two hotels appear in booking listings as operating: Grand Hotel Cravat at 29 boulevard Roosevelt, with about 60 rooms, and Chateau d’Urspelt in the Clervaux area, with about 56 rooms and a spa. Rates change with the season, so compare a few dates. If you plan a trail stay, look for a place near a station, since buses link most trailheads. Compare stays on Booking.com .
What Luxembourg does not offer
- There is no downhill ski resort in the Grand Duchy, and the ski areas people mention are across the border in Belgium.
- Canyoning, white-water rafting, jet-skiing and skydiving are not part of the Luxembourg offer.
- Climbing is allowed only at the Wanterbaach rocks in Berdorf, and only for members of a recognised climbing association who carry proof of membership.
