Planning Several Days on Borðoy
Anyone planning several days around Árnafjørður needs to know one thing first: the village offers no beds, no campsite, no meals and no shop. About 64 people live here. A multi-day trip therefore uses Klaksvík, the Northern Isles town 10 minutes away by car, as a base, with Árnafjørður as a half-day outing.
Choosing a base
Klaksvík has the restaurants, groceries, accommodation and the ferry to Kalsoy. Booking.com results for Klaksvík show what is available for your dates. Compare the location, the included services and the cancellation terms yourself, as listings change.
A two-day version
Day one covers Klaksvík and the village. See the Christianskirkjan, built in 1963, and the Norðoya Fornminnissavn museum, then drive north to the church, boat houses and viewpoint in Árnafjørður. Day two is for one big walk: either the Klaksvík to Árnafjørður route (5 km, about 1 hour 45 minutes, 395 m of climbing) or the Katlarnir loop (7 km, 653 m of climbing, about 2 hours 35 minutes officially). Both are rated difficult.
A three or four day version
Add a ferry day. The route 56 boat from Klaksvík to Syðradalur on Kalsoy takes about 20 minutes and carries about 12 cars. Advance booking is available, and ssl.fo shows the current fare. Bus 506 meets the boat. The Kallur Lighthouse hike on Kalsoy costs DKK 200 for adults and DKK 100 for ages 13 to 17, and under 13s go free.
Add a northern day. Drive through the Árnafjarðartunnilin and the Hvannasundstunnilin to Hvannasund, then on to Viðareiði, the northernmost village. Villingadalsfjall costs DKK 200 at the gate, and Enniberg needs a guide.
Puffins
For puffins, build a separate day around Mykines, which is open from 1 May to 31 August. Booking online costs about DKK 400 to 500 with a guide included, plus the ferry. Nólsoy is the other island for puffin visits. Keep away from nests, eggs and chicks.
Moving between islands
Bus 400 connects Klaksvík with Tórshavn. A few departures run only on request, phoned in an hour ahead. By car from Tórshavn or Eysturoy you use the subsea Norðoyatunnilin, 6,186 m long and open since 2006. A car pays DKK 50 per single trip, and a rental car pays DKK 100 return through the rental company. Eysturoyartunnilin costs DKK 175 one way, and the Strendur to Runavík tunnel DKK 125 one way. Settle each toll at service.tunnil.fo within 6 days, otherwise a DKK 50 invoice fee applies. Current prices are on Tunnil.fo .
Packing for the weather
- A windproof shell and warm layers for every outing, even in summer.
- Walking boots with good grip for loose ground.
- A GPX track on your phone, since cairns vanish in cloud.
- A bank card, which is widely accepted and works at the Kallur site.
Safety
Fog and wind change quickly, so keep a spare half day in the plan. Leave your route with your host, stay off the hill after dark and dial 112 in an emergency.
