Siauliai With Children
Children tend to do well in Šiauliai because the attractions are compact and the main boulevard is pedestrian. Plan one museum each morning and leave the afternoon for outdoors. All prices are in euros.
Hands-on museums
Bicycle Museum, Vilniaus g. 139. Children can sit on modern and antique bicycles and ride a velomobile, and there is a recreation area for resting. The collection tells the story of cycling in Lithuania and of the Vairas bikes built in the city. A ticket costs 8 EUR, or 4 EUR for reduced rates, and a family with one or two adults and children under 18 pays half price. Hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10:00 to 18:00, Wednesday 10:00 to 19:00, and weekends 11:00 to 17:00.
Rūta Chocolate Museum, Tilžės g. 133. The museum has interactive displays and a chocolate workshop, with entry from about 5 to 6 EUR. The guided tasting run through the tourist office is aimed at adults, so ask what is possible for younger children when you phone +370 610 41 050.
Photography Museum terrace, Vilniaus g. 140. For 1 EUR (0.50 EUR reduced) you can go up to the roof and see the camera obscura. The terrace is open from 1 March to 31 October.
Animals
The Cats Museum at Žuvininkų g. 18 displays cat-themed items from around the world. Three live cats live in the museum, and next door is a small exotic-animal garden with pythons and other snakes, lizards, crocodiles and a monkey. The city has no conventional zoo, so treat this as a short stop. Hours are Tuesday to Friday 09:00 to 17:00 and Saturday 09:00 to 16:00.
Outdoors
- Sun Terrace. The largest playground in the city, with flower walls and nearby cafés.
- Lake Talkša park. Playgrounds, a seven-ring labyrinth and a 1.8 km bike path sit beside the water. Marionette Wakepark hires out water bikes and boats. Swimming in the lake is not recommended.
- Iron Fox. This 7-tonne sculpture on the shore is about 15 m long and 6.6 m high.
Making something
Chaim Frenkel Villa, at Vilniaus g. 74, runs leather workshops for school pupils from grade 2 and for adults. Prices are 4 EUR for a keychain and 5 EUR for a bracelet, a tree toy, a totem or a pendant. Book on +370 41 524 389. The rose park next door is free and open until 22:00.
A word on the Hill of Crosses
The Hill of Crosses, 12 km north, is a place of prayer. If you bring children, explain the setting first, keep to the paths and leave every cross where it is.
Planning notes
- Entry to all Aušra Museum branches is free on the last Sunday of each month.
- In winter, ice makes the lakeside paths slippery, so pack boots with grip.
- Allow one to two hours for each museum.
