Things to Do in Phuket: Sea, Jungle, Culture
Before anything else: the sea
Most visitors want a beach day, so start with the rule that matters. West-coast beaches such as Patong, Karon, Kata, Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao and Nai Harn develop strong rip currents, and every monsoon season foreign visitors drown on them. The monsoon runs from about May to October. Lifeguards raise a red flag where currents are likely, and a red flag means stay out of the water. Red-and-yellow flags show the patrolled swimming area. On beaches with no flags or lifeguards, paddle only in shallow water. If a rip takes hold, swim sideways along the shore until it releases you. Alcohol and swimming do not mix. Rainy-season jellyfish stings can be dangerous.
Phuket sits well away from the border and far-south areas that UK and US advisories name. Day to day, the hazards here are the sea, rental scooters and overpriced fares.
Best in the dry season, about November to April
- Diving at Racha Noi and Racha Yai. Aussie Divers Phuket, based at Chalong, runs three-dive days for certified divers. The boat leaves about 08:00 and is back about 18:00, and the price is on enquiry. Racha Yai is also a snorkelling stop.
- The King Cruiser wreck. This car ferry hit Anemone Reef and sank on 4 May 1997. The wreck rests at about 31 to 32 m, which puts it in advanced-diver territory.
Rough southwest-monsoon seas make diving poor from May to October, and operators call off crossings.
Good in any season
- Phuket Elephant Sanctuary, Paklok. Guests observe the elephants and do not ride, bathe or feed them (feeding ended on 1 April 2026). The Canopy Walkway Tour is from 1,900 THB and lasts about 90 minutes on a 500 m walkway. The Half Day Program is from 3,000 THB for adults aged 13 and over. Reserve ahead on the canopy walkway page . There are no drop-ins.
- Soi Dog Foundation, Mai Khao. Free tours run Monday to Friday at 10:30 and 13:30, and the centre is shut at weekends. No booking is needed.
- Bang Pae waterfall. It sits in Khao Phra Thaeo forest, about 200 THB for adults and 100 THB for children, and is about 10 to 15 minutes from the trailhead on level ground.
- Chalong Bay Rum. The distillery sells a cocktail workshop at 12:00, 14:00 or 16:00 each day, and you must book. The operator’s page is chalongbayrum.com .
- Muay Thai. Tiger Muay Thai and Sinbi Muay Thai train people around Chalong and Rawai. Ask the camp for its drop-in rates.
Keep away from tiger-cub photo venues, elephant rides and animal shows.
Moving around
From the airport, the Phuket Smart Bus reaches Rawai via Patong, Karon and Kata for 100 THB, and the same bus company runs Patong to Bus Terminal 2 for 50 THB. The Dragon Line shuttle in town costs nothing. Look up times on the bus timetable , because schedules are not fixed here. Patong lies roughly 35 to 40 km from the airport by road, a 45 to 60 minute ride. A metered airport taxi adds a 100 THB fee. Grab and Bolt operate, though pickup spots at the terminal vary. Always agree a tuk-tuk price first.
