Turks and Caicos Walking Routes and Boardwalks
Travel notice, October 2026: the US government rates the Turks and Caicos Islands Level 2 (“Exercise Increased Caution”) because of crime, and the British FCDO reports more serious crime on Providenciales and Grand Turk than on the other islands. Most incidents are opportunistic theft, so keep valuables hidden and leave nothing on the sand. Customs rules are severe: any ammunition, including one forgotten bullet in a bag, brings a minimum 12-year prison term, so search every bag before you travel. Hurricane season lasts until the end of November. Source: GOV.UK travel advice .
Walking is a thin category in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Providenciales is spread out and built around cars, and organised walking tours are rare. The islands’ best scenery sits at the end of a drive or a boat ride, so most walks here are short, self-guided and part of another outing. This page lists the ones worth the effort. Prices are in US dollars.
Routes by island
Grand Turk: Cockburn Town
The capital’s old quarter is a stroll of about 1 mile along the waterfront on Duke Street and Front Street. Look for Bermudian-style buildings, villas, the post office and Guinep House, home of the National Museum. Restaurants open mainly when cruise ships call. Do not try to walk in from the Cruise Center, which is about 3 miles away in the sun with no sidewalks. Park or take a ride, then explore on foot.
Providenciales: Grace Bay and Cheshire Hall
- Grace Bay Beach: a little over 3 miles of sand, with free public accesses to begin or end a walk. Lifeguards are absent.
- Cheshire Hall Plantation: $15 for entry, with children under three free. Signed trails let you walk the ruins on your own, and a guided tour lasts about 30 minutes. The Great House suffered badly in Hurricane Irma (2017). Strollers and wheelchairs cannot use the site.
Little Water Cay
Boardwalk loops, a north trail and a south trail, take you among about 3,000 rock iguanas. The north trail is harder going. Entry is $20 for the short tour and $25 for the extended tour, Monday to Saturday between 10:00 and 15:30. Keep to the boards, leave the animals alone and carry out any litter.
Middle Caicos: Mudjin Harbour and the Crossing Place Trail
A cliff-top path above Mudjin Harbour looks over the cave and Dragon Cay. The Crossing Place Trail is an old route over hills, beaches and cliffs. Wear sturdy footwear, because shoreline rock is sharp, and keep off the rock at Dragon Cay. Getting there means the North Caicos ferry ($40 one way) and a rental car across the causeway.
Walks with a guide built in
Some attractions give you a guide as part of the entry fee. The Conch Bar Caves tour on Middle Caicos takes 20 to 30 minutes and costs $30 per person. At Wade’s Green Plantation on North Caicos, call ahead if you want a guide.
