Two and Three Day Trips from Malang by Car
Advisory, October 2026: Both routes pass through areas hit by wildfire or volcanic activity this year. Fires closed Mount Bromo several times from August to October, four firefighters and volunteers died on 15 October at Bukit Kembang, and the Malang-side Jemplang gate may close at short notice. Bromo is on volcano alert Level II and Semeru on Level III, with exclusion zones in force. Kawah Ijen was shut from 4 to 28 September because of fire. Check each site’s status before leaving (bromotenggersemeru.id for Bromo), and keep a spare day.
Before You Book
These plans assume a private car and driver based in Malang. Malang’s airport has domestic flights only, so international travellers connect through Surabaya’s Juanda airport. Rainy season runs from November to April, and its downpours can make canyon trails dangerous, so the dry months from May to October suit both routes.
Itinerary A: Two Days, One Night
Day 1: Waterfall, then mountain village
- 07:00: leave Malang and drive south-east via Dampit, about 2.5 hours.
- 09:30: Tumpak Sewu and the Goa Tetes cave. The ticket is about Rp 20,000 and the site is open 07:00 to 15:00. Sandals with grip and dry weather are essential, and you should be finished before 13:00.
- Afternoon: drive up to a homestay in Gubugklakah or Ngadas, or a hotel at Tosari or Sukapura. Go to bed early.
Day 2: Bromo and return
- 02:30: jeep pickup for King Kong Hill or Penanjakan, with sunrise between 05:00 and 06:00.
- 06:30: Sea of Sand crossing and the crater rim, then Pura Luhur Poten and the Savana grassland. Walking is the better choice than a horse.
- 10:30: breakfast at the homestay, then the drive to Malang, arriving by about 14:00.
Cost guide: car, jeep, park tickets and homestay come to about Rp 1,500,000 to 2,200,000 per person. Bromo entry for foreigners is about Rp 255,000, bought online at the official site.
Itinerary B: Three Days, Two Nights to Bali
Day 1: Malang to Cemorolawang
Spend the morning on the Kayutangan heritage walk and have ice cream at Toko Oen. Then drive past Probolinggo to Cemorolawang, the village on the rim of the Bromo caldera, for the night.
Day 2: Bromo to Banyuwangi
Watch the sunrise and walk up to the crater at about 03:00. After breakfast, drive 6 to 7 hours along the northern coast through Situbondo to Banyuwangi. Stay in Licin or in the city.
Day 3: Kawah Ijen and the ferry
Ijen is about 250 km from Malang, so it only fits as part of an overnight loop like this one. The Paltuding gate opens at 02:00 and closes at 12:00. Bring a health certificate dated within three days of your visit and a face mask, and book at ayoketamannasional.kehutanan.go.id , where tickets cannot be refunded. The hike is about 3 km to a crater rim at 2,386 m, with blue flames visible before dawn and a turquoise lake at sunrise. The crater closes on clean-up days, among them 6 November and 4 December 2026. Afterwards, go to Ketapang port for the 45-minute ferry to Gilimanuk, or on to Banyuwangi’s airport or station.
Quick Tips
- Pack a windbreaker, gloves and a hat, because the pre-dawn air at Bromo and Ijen is cold.
- Domestic Bromo tickets cost more at weekends and on holidays, and accommodation fills quickly.
- Confirm Bromo access first, and build a fallback around Batu or the city if the park is shut.
