Uganda Day Trips: Mabamba, Ngamba and Ziwa
Advisory as of October 2026. The US State Department rates Uganda Level 4, Do Not Travel, raised in May 2026 when an Ebola outbreak was active; Uganda declared that outbreak over in late August 2026, and the advisory also mentions crime, terrorism and unrest. The UK FCDO says attacks are very likely, including inside national parks, and recommends avoiding travel outside main towns after dark, except between Kampala and Entebbe airport. The Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 bars same-sex sexual activity in Uganda. See the FCDO safety page and the US listing .
Which Trips Work in a Day
A day trip in Uganda is a short list. Mabamba, Ngamba Island, Ziwa, the Equator, Ssezibwa and the Entebbe waterfront work from Kampala or Entebbe. Rafting, bungee and the Source of the Nile suit a Jinja day. Kibale and Bigodi suit a day from Fort Portal. Everything else needs overnight stays.
Entebbe and Kampala
- Mabamba Bay: canoe with a licensed guide to look for shoebills. About an hour from Entebbe; 1.5 to 2 hours from Kampala.
- Ngamba Island: chimpanzees on a sanctuary island. Boats leave at 09:00 and 12:45, and the Chimpanzee Trust takes bookings at chimpanzeetrust.org .
- Entebbe zoo and gardens: the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre opens daily from about 08:00 to 18:00, with non-resident prices near USD 15 for adults and USD 10 for children. The botanical gardens are a short walk away on the lake.
- The Equator at Kayabwe: a stop on the Kampala to Masaka road, close to the royal drum makers of Mpambire in Mpigi. Fees vary, so visit in daylight.
- Ssezibwa Falls: a Baganda spiritual site in Mukono District, off the road to Jinja.
- Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary: about three hours each way from Kampala, which makes it a long day. An armed ranger leads the foot tracking.
Jinja
Adrift and other operators run rafting; Adrift also has a bungee platform at Kangulumira. Boats go from Jinja to the Source of the Nile, a peaceful spot where the river leaves Lake Victoria. Bujagali Falls were flooded by a dam in the early 2010s. Mabira Forest Reserve is roughly 25 km west of town. Budget 2 to 4 hours by road between Kampala and Jinja.
Fort Portal
Kibale lies about 26 to 35 km to the south. Chimpanzee permits are about USD 250 for foreign non-residents, and children must be 12 or older. Bigodi Wetland and the Ndali-Kasenda crater lakes are nearby. Semuliki National Park and Sempaya hot springs are close to the Congo border, where the FCDO warning applies. Check the current fee at the gate.
Not Day Trips
Journeys from Kampala: Murchison (Paraa) 5 to 6.5 hours, Fort Portal 5 to 6, Queen Elizabeth (Mweya) 6.5 to 8 and Bwindi 8 to 10, with 2 to 3 hours on unpaved mountain road. Kidepo and the Rwenzori are further still. Plan at least two nights for each of them. Light aircraft from Entebbe or Kajjansi reach Kisoro, Kasese, Mweya and Apoka; check schedules with Aerolink Uganda.
Getting Around
The Entebbe to Kampala expressway takes about 35 to 45 minutes. FCDO does not recommend matatus or boda-bodas, so use a hired driver or a tour vehicle. Park gates accept cards and mobile money.
