Day 1: Odori, Susukino, and the ramen alley
Ride the JR Rapid Airport train 37 minutes from New Chitose Airport (CTS) into Sapporo Station for 1,430 yen; there’s no shinkansen option here, so build the fly-plus-train transfer in from the start. Walk Odori Park’s free stretch past the TV Tower and Clock Tower, then eat at Ramen Yokocho in Susukino, home of Sapporo’s own miso ramen, for 900-1,300 yen.
Day 2: Shiroi Koibito Park, then Mt Moiwa after dark
Spend the day at Shiroi Koibito Park for 800 yen, then ride the Mt Moiwa Ropeway 1-2 hours before sunset for 1,400 yen round trip and one of Japan’s New Three Major Night Views. A free shuttle bus runs every 15 minutes from the Ropeway Iriguchi streetcar stop.
Day 3: Nijo Market, the Beer Museum, and Maruyama
Browse Nijo Market for free or pay for a kaisendon seafood bowl, decide on the Sapporo Beer Museum’s 1,000 yen admission, and close at free, quiet Maruyama Park and Hokkaido Jingu shrine.
Day 4: Otaru, a cheap day trip out of the city
Take the JR Hakodate Main Line 30-40 minutes each way for 800 yen one-way to Otaru’s canal district and its glassware, music-box, and sushi scene.
Day 5: Jozankei onsen, the cheap relaxation day
Reach Jozankei by the Kappa Liner bus (960 yen, ~60 min), the Jotetsu Bus route 7/8 (1,000 yen, ~75 min), or subway to Makomanai plus a local bus (910 yen, ~70 min total). Day-use bathing fees vary by ryokan and stay modest; the riverside footbaths are free.
Day 6: Rusutsu or Niseko, the ski splurge day
Rusutsu is the closer, cheaper resort at roughly 90 minutes and 2,600 yen one-way by direct Donan Bus; Niseko is the bigger name but a longer 2-2.5 hour trip. Lift tickets and rental gear add substantially on top, so this is the trip’s one real splurge day.
Day 7: a free flex day, or Furano’s lavender fields in summer
In winter, keep Day 7 genuinely free: a slow morning, a return visit to whichever paid sight from earlier in the week is worth a second look (most travelers pick Mt Moiwa or Nijo Market), and one more pass through Susukino’s ramen and soup curry options before you fly out. In summer, swap this day for Furano’s lavender fields instead: Farm Tomita’s Lavender East field is scheduled open from late June through mid-July, with the wider bloom running into early August, a longer day trip of over two hours each way that’s worth booking as a fixed-departure tour rather than assembling the train and bus connections yourself.
What should you do with a completely free last day in Sapporo?
Use it to revisit whichever sight rewarded the most on the earlier days rather than chasing something new. Most budget travelers land on a second Mt Moiwa evening or another Nijo Market meal, since both hold up on a repeat visit better than a rushed new stop squeezed in before departure.
Is Furano worth swapping in for a free day in summer?
Yes, if your dates fall within the roughly late-June to early-August bloom window; outside that window there’s nothing to see and the free flex day is the better use of the time. The trip runs long enough, over two hours each way, that it deserves its own day rather than a rushed half-day add-on.
