Activities in Pisa for a First Visit
Activities in Pisa for a first visit
A first visit to Pisa needs about a day and a half. The list below is ordered by how most visitors plan their time, with 2026 prices in euros. Confirm opening hours and fares before travelling, since they change by season.
Quick list
- Leaning Tower climb: 251 steps, about 30 minutes, from EUR 20.
- Cathedral square monuments: complete ticket EUR 11 without the Tower and EUR 27 with it.
- Mura di Pisa walkway: EUR 5, about an hour.
- San Rossore by bike: pine avenues and bike hire at Cascine Vecchie.
- Cecina lunch: a chickpea flatbread, the local street food.
- Palazzo Blu: permanent collection EUR 5.
The Tower in detail
Timed entry means you must arrive at your slot, about 15 minutes early, with bags left in the free cloakroom. The shaft leans, so the steps feel uneven and some people feel dizzy. The Tower is not advised for people with heart or muscle conditions. Children must turn 8 within the calendar year to climb, and there are no reduced fares. Slots can be moved by time, not date, up to two hours before. Look for tickets on the cathedral authority’s own website, because resold tickets cost more and still carry a fixed slot. A pickpocket warning applies near the square, and so does a caution about people offering free bracelets.
The walls and the garden
Medieval walls enclose the north of the city, and a restored walkway on top gives rooftop views from Torre Santa Maria, which stands next to the Baptistery. Children up to 8 enter free, and a family ticket is EUR 15. A EUR 1.50 booking fee applies online. The Botanical Garden, founded in 1544 at Via Luca Ghini 13, is a short walk away and counts among the first university gardens in the world. Check the garden’s own page for its hours and entry price.
Out to San Rossore
San Rossore is an estate of about 4,600 hectares with pine woods, marshes and dunes. Its beaches are closed except on guided visits, and bathing is always prohibited there. Bus Linea 26 serves it from Sesta Porta on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays only. The gates close at 19:30 from April to mid October and at 15:30 in the colder months.
Eating
Cecina, also called torta di ceci, is baked in large copper pans. A “cinque e cinque” is cecina inside a bread roll. Il Montino at Via del Monte 1 is a long-established address to try. The Caffè dell’Ussero at Lungarno Pacinotti 26 is a historic coffee stop on the river.
Money and driving
A Pisa Card (about EUR 24, valid seven days) covers several museums and the walls but not the Tower. If you drive, remember the historic centre is camera-controlled and fines come by post, so leave the car outside the walls.
