Antwerp Photo Spots You Can Shoot for Free
The good news for a photographer on a budget is that almost every strong Antwerp shot is free to take. The city is compact, so you can string these together on foot in a morning or an evening. Here are the angles worth planning around, and when the light works for each.
Grote Markt and the Brabo Fountain
The central square is the classic frame: ornate guild-house facades, the Renaissance city hall, and the 1887 Brabo Fountain mid-throw in the foreground. Shoot it early, before the day crowds and the market stalls fill in, for a clean line on the facades.
The Cathedral of Our Lady spire
The 123-metre spire, the tallest church tower in the Benelux, is best caught from the narrow streets that funnel toward it, where the tower rises above the rooftops. Look for the gaps along the approach from Grote Markt rather than standing directly beneath it.
Centraal Station’s dome
Antwerpen-Centraal, the 1905 “railway cathedral,” is a free interior shot most travellers rush through: the vast stone waiting hall under its dome, and the iron-and-glass train shed stacked above the modern platforms. Go wide and use the symmetry of the staircases.
The MAS rooftop
The free rooftop of the MAS tower in the Eilandje docks gives the city’s best high vantage: a full 360-degree sweep over port, river, and old town, with no ticket needed. Time it for late afternoon so the light rakes across the rooftops.
Het Steen and the Scheldt embankment
The medieval Het Steen fortress on the riverfront frames well against the water, and its courtyard and rooftop are free. From the embankment beside it, the Scheldt opens west, which makes this the city’s best golden-hour and sunset line.
Cogels-Osylei in Zurenborg
For detail rather than skyline, the Art Nouveau facades of Cogels-Osylei and its neighbouring streets reward a slow lens: ironwork, sgraffito, and the “Four Seasons” villas, all free to photograph from the public street. Morning light suits the east-facing frontages.
Practical notes
Golden hour does the heavy lifting here, and the river gives you a clean western horizon for it. One 2026 crossing note: the premetro tunnel under the Scheldt is closed until around the end of March 2027, so reach the left-bank skyline viewpoint on the free Sint-Anna ferry, which is a shot in itself.
