Baku Day Trip Planner: Rock Art and Mud Volcanoes
Government travel advice. The British FCDO recommends against all travel within 5 km of Azerbaijan’s border with Armenia, and against all but essential travel to south-western districts where mines and unexploded munitions remain. The US advisory stands at Level 3, Reconsider Travel. Every day trip below heads away from those areas, and ordinary visitors arrive by air because land and sea entry is restricted. Read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you travel.
The useful question for any day trip is how many hours you spend on the road. This page lists what fits into a single day from Baku and what does not. Prices here are quoted in manat (AZN), at roughly 1.70 to the US dollar.

Gobustan
The rock-art landscape south-west of Baku has more than 6,000 carvings, and it is on the UNESCO list. A few listings quote 15 AZN rather than 10, and hours differ between sources, so go in the daytime and check first. The mud volcanoes lie past the main site, and the track needs a 4x4. One report puts a local 4x4 at about 20 to 30 AZN. Mud at these volcanoes is cold. Crusted pits, slippery clay after rain and sudden gas bursts make the paths the only safe place to stand. No shade and no food are on offer, so bring water. Do not climb on or touch the carvings.
The Absheron Peninsula
The peninsula runs north-east of Baku. Ateshgah, at Surakhani, is a temple whose flame is now fed by piped gas. Yanar Dag, at Mammadli village, burns on a hillside and opens from 10:00 to 19:00. A joint ticket for both is 25 AZN. Gala State Historical-Ethnographic Reserve has a medieval town display and a 14th-century fortress. All three fit in one day without much driving. The Yanar Dag page gives rules, including the need for permission before professional photography.
Shamakhi
The Juma Mosque in Shamakhi is traditionally dated to 743 and was damaged in the earthquakes of 1859 and 1902. Its reconstruction opened in May 2013. The town is about 120 km west of Baku, so leave early. Dress modestly, and ask before taking photographs inside.
Quba on a long day
Quba, around 170 km from the capital, takes 2.5 to 4 hours each way. It can be done in a day only with an early start and a patient driver.
Too far for one day
- Sheki: about 6 to 6.5 hours each way by bus.
- Gabala: 3.5 to 4 hours by road.
- Ganja: 5 hours or more.
- Naftalan: 4 to 5 hours.
- Shahdag: about 210 km, around 3 hours by car, a long winter day at best.
Give each of these at least one night.
Tips
- Agree taxi fares before setting off. Bolt and Yango work in Baku.
- Carry AZN cash for gates, drivers and small shops.
- Take a printed e-visa, issued through evisa.gov.az at roughly US$20 to 30 depending on service charges.
