Baku Attractions and Tickets: Fire Sites, Museums
Official advice for Azerbaijan. British FCDO guidance warns against all travel within 5 km of the Armenian border and against all but essential travel to a group of south-western districts, where landmines and unexploded shells remain from the 2020 and 2023 conflicts. The American advisory is Level 3, Reconsider Travel. Land and sea entry is restricted for ordinary visitors, who normally land at Baku airport. None of the attractions below is in the warned districts. Read gov.uk and travel.state.gov first.
Most paid attraction visits around Baku fall into a few groups. This page sorts them by what you pay and what to ask. Prices are for a foreign adult in manat (AZN), at about 1.70 to the US dollar, and they change, so confirm on the day.
Tickets you can buy at the gate
- Maiden Tower: 19 AZN, child 9 AZN, daily 10:00 to 19:00.
- Shirvanshahs’ Palace Complex: 24 AZN, child 12 AZN, same hours.
- Azerbaijan Miniature Art Museum: 5 AZN.
- Underground Bath: 10 AZN.
- Ateshgah (Surakhani), Yanar Dag (Mammadli) and Gala reserve: 15 AZN each.
- Gobustan rock art: about 10 AZN, though a few listings say 15.
No official combined Old City pass exists, so every Old City ticket is bought separately. Locals pay lower rates. The Icherisheher site publishes the full table.
Combination tickets on the Absheron Peninsula
Yanar Dag and the Ateshgah sell a joint ticket at 25 AZN. Add the Mud Volcanoes Tourism Complex and the price becomes 35 AZN. Each combo is per person and valid for 72 hours after the first entry, which makes a two-day spread possible. Parties of 10 or more can get a 10 per cent reduction.
The Yanar Dag guided walk takes around two hours and costs 3 AZN in Azerbaijani or 10 AZN in other languages. The Ateshgah’s flame is fed by piped gas, because the natural supply ended in 1969. See the Yanar Dag plan-your-visit page for the rules.
Gobustan tours
Operators advertise half-day Gobustan and mud volcano tours from about 65 AZN per person, and entry is sometimes extra. The site is about 60 km south-west of the city. The volcanoes sit beyond the main reserve and need a 4x4. Choose a tour that says plainly whether tickets and the 4x4 leg are included.
Museums with a guide
The Heydar Aliyev Center, opened in 2012 to a Zaha Hadid design, and the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum are the two big modern-building stops. Their ticket prices are reported inconsistently, with the Carpet Museum at about 10 AZN for a foreign adult and closed on Mondays, so ask any seller whether the ticket is inside the quoted price.
Questions to ask any seller
- Is entry included, or only transport?
- How many people are in the vehicle or group?
- What language does the guide speak?
- What happens if a site is shut, as the Carpet Museum is on Mondays?
- Is the price quoted in AZN?
