Guided Tours in Azerbaijan: Gobustan and Absheron
Government advice before any tour. The British FCDO recommends against all travel within 5 km of Azerbaijan’s border with Armenia and against all but essential travel to the south-western districts of the 2020 and 2023 conflicts, where mines and unexploded munitions remain. The US advisory is Level 3, Reconsider Travel. Land crossings with Armenia and Russia are closed, and airports are open as normal. Tours covered here stay in Baku, Absheron and Gobustan. Decline any package that includes the restricted districts, and read gov.uk and travel.state.gov .
Guided attraction visits in Azerbaijan cluster around Baku. This page matches tours to interests and lists what the official tickets cost, so you can judge whether a package is worth it. Prices are in manat (AZN), at about 1.70 to the US dollar.
If you want medieval Baku
Take a guided walk through the Old City. Official fees for a foreign adult are 19 AZN for the Maiden Tower and 24 AZN for the Shirvanshahs’ Palace Complex; children aged 5 to 17 pay 9 and 12 AZN. Opening hours for both are 10:00 to 19:00 daily. Online resellers list timed tickets above those prices, and they tend to be non-refundable with guides extra. Compare against the official fee table . The Tourist Information Center at Boyuk Qala Street 55 can answer questions.
If you want rock art and mud volcanoes
Operator guides quote half-day Gobustan and mud volcano tours from about 65 AZN per person and full days from about 95 AZN, often without entry tickets, so ask what is included. Gobustan itself is 60 to 70 km south-west of Baku and costs about 10 AZN to enter (some listings say 15). The mud volcanoes at Dashgil need a 4x4 on an unpaved track, which is the strongest argument for joining a tour. Rock carvings are protected, so guides and visitors stay on the trails.
If you want fire and the Absheron coast
An Absheron circuit combines the Ateshgah fire temple, Yanar Dag and the Mud Volcanoes Tourism Complex, which the State Tourism Agency runs near Baku. Tickets are 15 AZN each, or 25 AZN for Yanar Dag plus Ateshgah and 35 AZN for all three, valid for 72 hours and priced per person. Groups of 10 or more get 10 percent off. Yanar Dag also sells its own two-hour guided tour at 10 AZN in languages other than Azerbaijani, taking in the Qirmaki Valley, sulphur springs and Ottoman trenches, which can only be seen with a guide. Professional photography is not allowed. The reserve page has the rules.
If you want carpets
The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum on Baku Boulevard runs a guided tour at 12 AZN on top of its 10 AZN ticket. It is closed on Mondays, and some galleries may be shut.
