Gdańsk Solo on a Budget: What a Day Costs
Travelling alone means no one to split a taxi or a family ticket with, so every price lands on you. Gdańsk still works well for a solo visitor on a budget, as long as you build the day around free entry and public transport.
Transport for one
A shared taxi is a group’s trick. Alone, public transport wins almost every time.
- ZTM single ride: 4.80 PLN, no changes allowed.
- ZTM 75-minute ticket: 6.00 PLN, changes allowed.
- ZTM 24-hour ticket: about 22 PLN, worth it once you make four or more journeys with changes.
- SKM to Sopot: about 6.50 PLN, around 20 minutes.
- SKM to Gdynia: about 9 to 10 PLN, around 35 minutes.
Buy ZTM tickets in the Jakdojade app, at kiosks or on the card readers inside trams and buses, with fares on ztm.gda.pl . SKM tickets come from Jakdojade, Koleo, SkyCash or Bilkom, station machines, ticket offices or the conductor.
From the airport, the ZTM bus 210 to Gdańsk Główny takes about 35 to 45 minutes and is the cheapest option, with its own airport fare listed by ZTM. A solo Uber or Bolt costs about 45 to 70 PLN.
Free entry, one per day
Each big museum has its own free day, so a solo visitor can see one a day without paying:
- Monday: Artus Court, the Main Town Hall and the Amber Museum, normally 26 to 37 PLN each. All three close on Tuesday.
- Tuesday: the Museum of the Second World War, normally about 32 to 35 PLN. Free tickets are limited, so queue at opening. It closes on Monday.
- Wednesday, 13:00 to 17:00: the Crane, normally 23 PLN.
The sixth-floor deck at the European Solidarity Centre is free on any open day, weather permitting. Branch hours for the city museums are on muzeumgdansk.pl .
Eating for one
A milk bar (bar mleczny) is the solo budget traveller’s canteen: order at the counter, sit at a shared table, and pay cafeteria prices for soup and pierogi. Lunch is the main meal to eat here, since it is cheap and filling enough to carry you to dinner.
Pay by card almost anywhere, even at kiosks, but always choose to pay in PLN on the terminal. Picking your home currency triggers a conversion with a markup. As a guide, about 3.85 PLN buys one US dollar and about 4.35 PLN buys one euro, though rates move.
A sample day
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| ZTM 24-hour ticket | about 22 PLN |
| A museum on its free day | free |
| ECS roof deck | free |
| Milk-bar lunch | cafeteria prices |
| SKM return to Sopot | about 13 PLN |
| Sopot pier, from 1 October | free |
Where to sleep
A room is the biggest solo cost. Search single rooms and hostels on Booking.com and compare the Main Town with Wrzeszcz, which sits on the SKM line. For a guided walk that costs less than a private guide, browse group tours on GetYourGuide .
Two expensive mistakes
Drinking in the street is illegal in Poland, with a 100 PLN on-the-spot fine. The costlier mistake is following a promoter on Długa into a basement club. Solo men are the main target, drinks are spiked, and card charges run into thousands of złoty. Walk past.
The verdict
On a solo budget, the best day in Gdańsk is a Monday: the city museums are free, the ECS deck is free, and a 24-hour ticket covers the rest. Avoid arriving on a Tuesday if you want the city museums, since they are all shut.
