Geghard Day Trip Plans from Yerevan
Geghard is an easy excursion from the capital, and most visitors fold it into a day that also takes in Garni. This page sets out the distances, the ways to get there and the extra stops that work on the same day.

Choosing how to travel
Taxi or private driver. The simplest option, since the monastery has no bus of its own. For a Garni to Geghard hop, settle the fare and how long the driver waits before you leave.
Marshrutka. Number 266 serves Garni and number 284 serves Goght. Both depart from the Gai bus station in Nor Nork. Blogs report a fare of about 250 AMD, a journey of about an hour and departures every 30 to 40 minutes once the van is full. A quoted timetable shows the 284 leaving for Goght at 11:11, 12:11 and 12:59, with buses back from Goght at 9:00, 13:30, 14:20, 15:50 and 19:30 at about 100 AMD. Treat all of this as approximate and confirm it on t-armenia.com or at the station.

A route that works
- Leave Yerevan in the morning and stop at Charents Arch, a 1957 arch that frames Mount Ararat on clear days. Ararat lies in Turkey.
- Visit Geghard first, while it is quiet. Entry is free and parking is about 200 AMD.
- Drive back to Garni for the temple, then go down to the Symphony of the Stones.
- Eat in the village. Lavash baking classes are on offer there.

Adding another stop
- Lake Sevan and Sevanavank. Operators list Geghard and Sevan together as a private day of 7 to 8 hours.
- Khor Virap and the Azat Reservoir. These feature in operator itineraries with Garni and Geghard. Khor Virap stands next to the closed Turkish border.
- Tsaghkadzor and Kecharis. Operators also pair these with Garni and Geghard.
Seasonal notes
Geghard stays open all year. Summer is hot in the gorge, and a winter closure of the Symphony road can change the plan. Mornings are best for quiet.
Manners and money
The monastery is active. Cover your shoulders and knees, and do not interrupt a service. Cash is needed at the car park, the stalls and the Symphony ticket booth.
As of October 2026 the FCDO warns against travel in the 5 km strip along Armenia’s eastern border with Azerbaijan and on the M16/H26 road linking Ijevan and Noyemberyan. Geghard sits in Kotayk, outside that strip and off that road. The latest wording is on gov.uk .
