Klaipeda Museums, Squares and Sculptures
The old core of Klaipėda sits on both sides of the Danė, and a sightseeing day here is mostly museums, squares and riverside. German Memel left its mark in the street grid and the warehouses. Here are the main stops with their 2026 prices in euros.
1. Castle Museum and bastions
Memelburg Castle was founded here by the Teutonic Order in 1252. Today the earthwork bastions remain, and the Castle Museum at Priešpilio g. 2 is inside them. It also holds Museum 39/45, an exposition on the war years. Entry is EUR 6, or EUR 3 for reduced fares. Opening hours are 10:00 to 18:00, with the last ticket sold at 17:30. Between 15 June and 16 September the museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and for the rest of the year on Sundays and Mondays. State holidays are also closed days.
2. History Museum and Blacksmith’s Museum
These two sit under the same management as the castle. Entry to the History Museum (Didžioji Vandens g. 2) is EUR 4 (EUR 2 reduced). The Blacksmith’s Museum, at Šaltkalvių g. 2, charges EUR 3 (EUR 1.50 reduced). A joint ticket for these two and the castle costs EUR 9 (EUR 4.50 reduced). The Sculpture Park is free. See mlimuziejus.lt for the full price table.
3. Theatre Square
The Drama Theatre faces the square, and in front of it stands the Ännchen von Tharau fountain. It honours Simon Dach, a baroque poet from Memel, and his poem Ännchen von Tharau. The fountain dates from 1912. The figure on it today is a replica from about 1990, and the local tourism site calls it a talking sculpture. It is free to see at any hour, and you can read more on the klaipedon.lt page .
4. Bronze sculptures
Small bronze sculptures are placed along the Old Town streets. They reward a slow walk, especially in the grid of lanes south of the river.
5. Meridianas on the Danė
This wooden three-masted barque was built in Turku, Finland, in 1948. It is moored on the river and houses a restaurant.
6. Clock and Watch Museum
The museum on Liepų g. 12 charges EUR 5, or EUR 2.50 reduced. Opening days are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 10:00 to 18:00, Thursday, 12:00 to 20:00, and Sunday, 10:00 to 16:00. Mondays and public holidays are closed days. The LNDM page lists the latest hours. The Pranas Domšaitis Gallery is at Liepų g. 33.
7. The Sea Museum across the strait
The Lithuanian Sea Museum is housed in the Kopgalis fort at Smiltynės g. 3 on the Curonian Spit, with the Old Ferry (E. Galvanausko bul. 1) as the way across. A round-trip foot ticket is EUR 1.70. For the museum itself, adults pay EUR 10 between October and April and EUR 14 between May and September.
8. Northern Pier
Free to walk and open to the sea wind, the pier at Melnragė shows ships heading into port. Keep off the wet boulders and out of the water.
