Quiet Evenings in Klaipeda for Couples
Klaipėda is not a city of grand gestures. Its appeal for couples is slower: sunsets over a working harbour, an evening among pine trees and old brick lanes with few people in them. Prices are in euros.
Golden hour at the harbour mouth
Walk out along the Northern Pier at Melnragė, a long breakwater at the edge of the Baltic. Ferries and cargo ships pass through the harbour entrance in front of the setting sun. It costs nothing. The stones at the base are slippery when wet, and nobody should swim here, so keep to dry footing and take extra care in wind.
Across the strait at dusk
The ferry to Smiltynė runs from the Old Ferry Terminal at E. Galvanausko bul. 1, which is staffed from 06:00 to 24:00. A foot passenger pays EUR 1.70 for the round trip, with the return included. Allow time to look at the posted timetable at keltas.lt so you are not caught on the wrong side. On the spit side, follow the pine forest path down to the beach for a quieter view of the sun going down.
Cobbles, courtyards and a fountain
Wander the Old Town after the daytime visitors have gone. The Friedrich Passage is a restored courtyard from the 17th century, and the lanes around it are lined with brick and half-timbering. Over on Theatre Square, beside the Drama Theatre, the Ännchen von Tharau fountain remembers the Memel-born poet Simon Dach and his poem. The fountain was built in 1912, and the figure now on it was recreated around 1990. Visiting is free at any hour.
Paddling after dark
Evening canoe tours on the Danė glide beneath the bridges of the Old Town. On booking sites the price is roughly EUR 30 to 55 per person. The water is gentle, so it is a fair choice for pairs who are new to paddling.
Supper aboard Meridianas
Meridianas is a wooden three-masted barque from 1948, built in Turku, Finland. It now serves as a restaurant on the Danė, and one listing gives hours of 11:00 to 22:00. Check the hours before you book.
A room with history
The Michaelson Boutique Hotel, at Žvejų g. 18A, occupies an 18th-century warehouse on the Danė. Search for it and other rooms on Booking.com .
Sample plan
Arrive on a Friday, wander the Old Town and eat on the ship. Spend Saturday on the spit, with the Lithuanian Sea Museum by day if you like aquariums, then the beach at sunset. Winter hours at the museum are Friday to Sunday only. Sea temperatures average about 13 degrees C in June and about 16 degrees C in July, so a swim is a summer extra and not a plan.
