Where to Stay Near Geghard
Geghard does not support a multi-day trip on its own. It is one monastery complex at the head of a gorge, with a car park and stalls at the gate, and visitors usually see it in a few hours. Longer plans are built around a base nearby and use Geghard as one outing.
Three ways to base yourself
1. Garni. The village is about 10 km down the valley. The village offers the temple and the gorge with its Symphony of the Stones, plus restaurants and guesthouses. Chez Yvette is listed with a garden, a terrace, a restaurant and a seasonal outdoor pool. From Garni, Geghard is a 15 to 20 minute drive.
2. Goght. This village lies about 4 km before the monastery. Listed places include Checkpoint Goght, Bed and Breakfast 3 Gs and VILLage GOGHT. Goght is the terminus of marshrutka 284 from Yerevan, and you can walk from there to the monastery in about an hour. Rooms can be compared on Booking.com .
3. Yerevan. A stay of 4 to 5 nights in the capital with a half day at Garni and Geghard is the most common pattern. The monastery is about 37 to 40 km from the city.
Room prices at all three change with the season, so look at live rates.
A balanced three-day outline
- Day 1, Garni. Arrive, see the temple and the gorge in the afternoon and eat in the village.
- Day 2, Geghard and a workshop. Go to the monastery early, then return to Garni for a lavash baking class.
- Day 3, onward. Take a day out to Lake Sevan or to Khor Virap, then return or move on.
Longer excursions
- Lake Sevan and Dilijan. Sevan town is about 84 km from Geghard, about 1 hour 15 minutes by road. Treat Dilijan as a separate day.
- Khor Virap, Noravank and Areni. Khor Virap stands beside the closed border with Turkey. Noravank and Areni suit a different day from Geghard.
- Tsaghkadzor. It is close, and some operator itineraries combine it with Garni and Geghard.
What is not on offer
Geghard has no hotel, spa or restaurant of its own, so do not plan to stay at the monastery. There are no craft workshops at the gate either, and the lavash classes are in Garni.
At the monastery
It is an active church. Cover your shoulders and knees, speak quietly and leave services undisturbed. Entry is free. Parking costs about 200 AMD. Daylight hours are approximate, so check on the day.
As of October 2026 the FCDO warns against travel in the 5 km strip along Armenia’s eastern border with Azerbaijan and on the M16/H26 road linking Ijevan and Noyemberyan. Geghard sits in Kotayk, outside that strip and off that road. The latest wording is on gov.uk .
