Attraction tours at a glance
Kaikōura’s paid attractions are mostly guided wildlife outings by sea or air, with a zipline course on a nearby farm. This page lists each one with its length and approximate cost in NZD, drawn from operator pages in October 2026. Rates are reviewed yearly, so confirm before you book.
By sea
Whale Watch Kaikōura is the best known. The fare is about $185 for adults and about $60 for ages 3 to 15. You check in at the Whaleway Station, then a bus takes you to the South Bay marina. The outing takes about 3 hours 15 minutes. Whale Watch sells winter combinations that add a flight: about $399 with a helicopter and about $255.50 with a fixed-wing plane. It also lists a Christchurch day trip with Canterbury Leisure Tours at about $320, and a Coastal Pacific day option from about $285 to $503. See the Whale Watch tours .
Albatross Encounter (96 Esplanade) runs a standard trip at about $200 for adults and $95 for children, and a specialist trip at about $290 and $205. Allow about 2.5 hours, with 15 to 20 minutes to reach the birds. The trip goes out over the canyon, because Kaikōura has no albatross colony on land. See the Albatross Encounter tour page .

Wings Over Whales flies two Gippsland Airvans, each carrying seven passengers and a pilot, with large dome windows. A private flight is from about $1,900. On the land
EcoZip Adventures starts in town and uses a Unimog truck to cross the Kahutara River to Rakanui Station. The tour takes about 3.5 hours and has five ziplines totalling 2.2 km. Adults pay about $199, children about $129 (with a ziplining adult) and a family about $527. See EcoZip .
A Kayak Zip Combo with Kaikōura Kayaks takes about 6 hours and has been listed at $349 to $364.
Practical notes
- Seasickness is the main medical issue on boats, and tours cancel in rough seas.
- Flights also depend on weather.
- If you fly a drone, treat it as an aircraft: stay more than 150 m away horizontally from any marine mammal.
