Kaikoura Walking Tracks and Self-Guided Walks
Self-guided walks around Kaikōura
Walking in Kaikōura means following DOC tracks on your own, from an easy forest loop to a steep mountain climb. The walks are free, and they are arranged below from shortest to longest.
Hinau Track (about 45 minutes)
This loop through large hīnau trees starts at the Mt Fyffe car park and is suited to families. An unbridged stream crosses the route, so take care with young children. DOC also lists the Mt Fyffe Forest Walk in the area. See the DOC Hinau Track page .
Mt Fyffe lookout, hut and summit
The Mt Fyffe car park lies about 15 km from town, reached along Ludstone, Swamp and Postman’s Roads. Vehicles may not go past the car park, and mountain bikers share the track with walkers.
- Lookout: near the firepond, about 1 hour above the car park.
- Mt Fyffe Hut: about 5 hours return, a 14 km round trip on the same track.
- Summit: 1,602 m, reached by a very steep south-west ridge.
DOC warns that severe weather has damaged roads in the region, and Kaikōura flooded in July 2026. Check NZTA Journeys, the Kaikōura District Council and DOC before you drive to the car park. Carry a windbreaker even for the lookout. See the DOC Mt Fyffe page .
Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway (3 hours or more)
The walkway is a DOC loop of about 11.7 km, and DOC advises at least 3 hours. You can shorten the day by turning back at any viewpoint.
The first leg, from the town centre to the Point Kean car park, is 4.4 km and takes about 50 minutes. A 200 m path then leads to the Point Kean viewpoint. Beyond that, a 1.5 km stretch to Whalers Bay needs about 25 minutes, and the final 1.1 km to the South Bay viewpoint takes about 20.
At high tide the shoreline can be blocked, so look up tide times first. Do not take the Whalers Bay shoreline back. Cliff edges are not fenced. Dogs are only allowed on three sections. Fur seals use the rocks, so stay at least 20 m away and keep dogs and children back from them. See the DOC walkway page .
Kaikōura Coast Track (2 to 3 days)
This private farm walk crosses Hurunui land, and the operator is based at 356 Conway Flat Road, Cheviot. Luggage is carried between stops. The walk takes two or three days and listed prices are about $230 for adults and $180 for children. Ask the operator which itinerary applies and what it costs now.
What to carry
- A windbreaker, water and sturdy shoes.
- A tide table for the peninsula.
- A map and a plan left with someone before a mountain walk.
