Kathmandu for Two
Kathmandu’s romantic side lives behind walls, not on the street: a sunken 1920s garden across from Thamel’s chaos, a rooftop over Boudhanath at dusk, a ridge-top room facing the Himalaya. One paid experience and one free one, and the intensity outside stops mattering.
The Garden of Dreams
A restored 1920s neoclassical garden on Durbar Marg, built by Field Marshal Kaiser Shumsher Rana, with manicured lawns, marble fountains and pergolas closed off from the street outside. Foreigner entry is NPR 400 per person, charged even for coffee-only visits, open daily 9:00 am to 10:00 pm. Dinner on the Boudhanath ring
Rooftop restaurants on the circular perimeter of Boudhanath Stupa, among them Roadhouse Café Boudha and La Casita de Boudhanath, look straight at the great white dome. Arrive by 5:00 pm for sunset, when butter lamps start flickering around the base and monks complete the day’s last kora. A full dinner with wine or beer for two runs roughly NPR 2,500 to 4,500. A night at Dwarika’s
In Battisputali, Nepal’s best-known heritage stay, Dwarika’s Hotel, is built from 13th to 16th century carved Newar wooden pillars, windows and lintels salvaged from demolitions across the valley and set into handmade terracotta brick. A Nagarkot balcony at sunrise
Ridge-top resorts at Nagarkot, roughly 90 minutes from Thamel, put a private balcony in front of the high Himalaya instead of a street corner. Boutique rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows run $90 to $220 USD a night, and the sunrise, peaks turning pink and gold, happens from bed if the room faces the right way.
