Lucerne Multi-Day Stays and Pass Choices
Lucerne works better as a single base than as a stop on a chain of overnights, since every mountain and lake destination around it is a return trip. This page outlines a short stay and explains the passes. Fuller schedules sit in the itinerary guides.
A short stay outline
| Day | Focus | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | City and lake | Old Town, covered bridges, Musegg Wall (1 April to 1 November), afternoon boat |
| 2 | Pilatus | Golden Round Trip May to October, or the cogwheel railway return from Alpnachstad |
| 3 | Rigi or Titlis | Pick by the weather forecast and the summit webcams |
| 4 | Stoos or Interlaken | Funicular day, or the Zentralbahn panorama line in about 1 hour 50 minutes |
The Verkehrshaus makes a good swap for any rainy day, and the Gletschergarten fits a shorter slot.
Which pass fits
The Swiss Travel Pass runs across the whole country. On the Lucerne mountains it is free for Rigi and the Stanserhorn and half price for Pilatus (CHF 42 return from Alpnachstad instead of CHF 84) and Titlis. It also covers the regular lake boats.
The Lucerne Travel Pass replaced the Tell-Pass on 1 April 2026 and covers a smaller area, from Pfäffikon SZ and Baar to Göschenen, Interlaken Ost and Langnau i. E. Inside it, Pilatus, Rigi and Titlis are free, along with lake boats, trains and buses. The 2026 adult prices are about CHF 240 for 3 days, CHF 265 for 4 days, CHF 290 for 5 days and CHF 365 for 10 days, and accompanied children from 6 to 15 pay about CHF 30 in total. The 2 day version has been withdrawn, and Swiss Travel Pass holders get no discount on it. Details are on the Swiss Railways pass page .
Rule of thumb: a trip that is mostly Lucerne and its mountains favours the Lucerne Travel Pass, and a trip that continues to other Swiss cities favours the Swiss Travel Pass.
