Luxembourg Couples Weekend by Wine and Ramparts
Luxembourg has no ready-made romance packages, so a good couples’ trip here is built from small pieces: a glass of wine in a cellar, a walk on the ramparts and an evening view. Everything below can be arranged on your own. Second-class trains, trams and buses are free, which lets you drink wine on the Moselle without worrying about the drive back.
Saturday: the Moselle
Spend the day along the river between Remich and Grevenmacher.
- Morning in Remich. Caves St Martin is a network of limestone tunnels almost a kilometre long. Guided tours last about 45 minutes and end with a glass of wine or cremant for EUR 9. They run Wednesday to Sunday, from mid-March to mid-December.
- Afternoon in Grevenmacher. Caves Bernard-Massard offers a guide, a film and one glass for about EUR 8. Tours are listed Wednesday to Sunday between April and the end of October, and by arrangement outside those months.
Reserve both ahead, and check the tasting hours rather than the shop hours. The Bernard-Massard tour listing shows the current details.
Sunday: the city at dusk
Walk the Chemin de la Corniche, a free path on the old ramparts that begins at the Bock promontory. The writer Batty Weber is credited with calling it the finest balcony in Europe. It looks over the Grund, where you can have dinner.
After dark, take the Pfaffenthal panoramic lift from Pescatore park. It is free and listed as open until 01:00, though it stops for maintenance on the first Monday of each month. The funicular to Kirchberg is also free and rises about 40 metres in 63 seconds.
Seasonal additions
Winter markets. The 2026 season of lights is reported to start on 20 November and end on 3 January. Expect a Christmas market on Place d’Armes, the Wantermaart with a Ferris wheel on Place de la Constitution, the Niklosmaart on Place de Paris and a rink at Kinnekswiss. Confirm dates before booking travel.
Solar boat. Between May and 1 October the Upper Sure Lake has a guided solar boat from Insenborn. It takes about 2 hours and costs EUR 10 per adult. There are no Monday departures, booking is required and dogs are not allowed. The boat is out of season now.
Staying the night
Grand Hotel Cravat on boulevard Roosevelt sits in the capital. Chateau d’Urspelt, near Clervaux, has a spa. Both are listed online as open, and neither is priced here, so compare rates and read recent reviews. Browse options on Booking.com .
Pointers
- Reach the cellars by bus, because second-class tickets cost nothing.
- Winter weekends fill up around the markets, so book rooms early.
- A LuxembourgPass from about EUR 23 for a day covers sights, but not travel, and it is worth it only if you plan several paid visits.
