Monteverde Day Trips: What Is Within Reach
A Short List
Monteverde works best as a place to stay for a couple of nights, not as a hub for far-flung excursions. The reliable day outings are all close to Santa Elena. The famous sights elsewhere in Costa Rica involve transfers long enough to swallow the day, so this guide is brief by design.
Close to Town
Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve lies about 6 km north of town. Allow a morning for the 12 km trail network or the tower. Adults pay 10,000 colones (about $22) for self-guided entry in 2026. The approach road has rough dirt stretches, and a high-clearance car helps in the wet season.
Bajo del Tigre is in Cerro Plano and has 4.5 km of paths run by the Monteverde Conservation League. It charges $18 for adults on their own, or $43 for a guided day walk booked ahead for two or more people.
Curi-Cancha is a private reserve 300 m northeast of the Monteverde Cheese Factory. Its walks range from a $25 self-guided entry to a $125 bird tour.
El Tigre Waterfalls is a hike of roughly 8 km with 4 waterfalls and swimming holes, about 20 minutes from Santa Elena. Last entry is early in the afternoon, so go in the morning.
Monteverde Extremo Park is in La Cruz de Abangares, and transport from Monteverde costs $10 per person. It has a 143 m bungee, a 4 km canopy tour and horseback rides.
The reserves are no place for a swim, since the streams there are not for bathing. The El Tigre Waterfalls hike is the exception.
The Arenal Question
La Fortuna is a 3 to 3.5 hour drive of about 115 km. Many visitors cross Lake Arenal instead on the jeep-boat-jeep transfer, which takes about 3 hours in total and includes a 45 minute boat ride. Prices are around $25 to $35 per person one way when shared. Because of that travel time, the trip makes more sense as a move between hotels than a round trip.
Hot springs are around La Fortuna and Arenal. Monteverde has none.
Far Away
- Manuel Antonio: about 4 to 5 hours each way.
- Rio Celeste: roughly 3 hours or more each way.
- Guanacaste beaches such as Playas del Coco and Hermosa: roughly 3 hours.
- Rafting: day trips with pickup go to the Rio Tenorio (class 3 to 4), about 2 hours each way.
- Tortuguero: out of range for a day trip from here.
Driving Tips
Route 606 is mostly paved and a normal car can manage it. It is steep and winding, and there are no street lights, so finish driving before dark. Fog is common. Ask your hotel about road works before a long drive, and read the UK FCDO guidance for Costa Rica for road safety notes.
