Multi-Day Uganda: Western and Northern Routes
Advisory as of October 2026. The US State Department has Uganda at Level 4, Do Not Travel, a level it applied in May 2026 amid an Ebola outbreak that Uganda declared over in late August 2026, and it names crime, terrorism and unrest too. The UK FCDO says attacks are very likely, national parks included. Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 outlaws same-sex sexual activity. Read the FCDO regional risks page and the US listing before fixing dates.
Route Planning Rules
Two rules shape every Uganda itinerary. Distances are long, and gorilla permits fix both your date and your sector. Drive times from Kampala are roughly 5 to 6.5 hours to Murchison (Paraa), 5 to 6 to Fort Portal, 6.5 to 8 to Mweya and 8 to 10 to Bwindi, the last with 2 to 3 hours on unpaved mountain road. Flights from Entebbe or Kajjansi shorten some legs; Aerolink Uganda serves Kihihi, Kisoro, Pakuba, Kasese, Mweya and Apoka, and schedules should be checked.
Western Route, 7 to 10 Days
- Entebbe, then Kibale for chimpanzee tracking (about USD 250, minimum age 12) and the Bigodi wetland.
- Queen Elizabeth National Park for the Kazinga Channel and, in the Ishasha sector, tree-climbing lions. Terrorists killed two tourists and their driver in the park in October 2023, so book an established operator and avoid driving at night.
- Bwindi for gorillas: about USD 800 per permit (about USD 600 in April, May and November), minimum age 15, escorts near the Congo border.
- Lake Bunyonyi, a highland lake near Kabale, for a rest day by canoe.
- Lake Mburo for a boat cruise or an armed-ranger walk.
- Back to Kampala through the Equator stop at Kayabwe.
Semuliki, Rwenzori, Kasese and Bundibugyo need extra care, because FCDO reports attacks on security sites in the area in November 2025. Border posts such as Bwera can close without warning.
Northern Route, 5 to 7 Days
Start at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and continue to Murchison Falls for a launch cruise, a delta trip and the walk to the Top of the Falls. Daily entry is about USD 45. Go on to Kidepo through Gulu and Kitgum, or fly to Apoka. Kidepo offers Narus Valley game drives and a Karamojong manyatta visit. White rhinos returned there in March 2026; it is early, and sightings are not guaranteed. Cattle raids happen in Karamoja, the South Sudan border is near and you should not drive at night. Between March and May and October and November, floods call for a 4x4.
East and the Mountains
- Jinja: rafting and Adrift’s bungee tower; Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon beyond. Sipi’s highest fall is about 95 to 100 metres.
- Rwenzori Central Circuit: 7 to 9 days from Nyakalengija to Margherita Peak (5,109 metres). Guides and porters are compulsory, summit terrain is technical glacier and 7-day packages are about USD 1,660 to 2,150. Kasese-district warnings apply.
Logistics
Standard safari vehicles are 4x4s, as coaches cannot get to Bwindi, Mgahinga or park tracks. The entry rules for your nationality, including any yellow fever certificate requirement, should be checked well before you fly.
