Multi-Day Trip Ideas for Ecuador
Safety notice for travellers, October 2026: Check two government sources before booking Ecuador: the UK FCDO page and the US State Department advisory . At the time of writing the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the coastal provinces of Esmeraldas, Manabí, Santa Elena, Guayas, El Oro, Los Ríos and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas (airside transit at Guayaquil airport is excepted) and to the 20 km Colombian border strip, which takes in Lago Agrio. The US rates the country Level 2 overall, with Level 3 and Level 4 areas named inside it. A 60-day state of exception that began on 15 September 2026 covers eight provinces, Pichincha and Quito among them, and curfews have returned more than once this year. The highlands, Cuenca and the Galápagos fall outside the FCDO regions. Even there, plan around muggings, bag snatching, express kidnapping after street-hailed taxis and heavy El Niño rain and landslides. Everything on this page concerns places outside the warned areas.
Longer trips in Ecuador need more planning than day tours, because of altitude, mountain weather and the price of lodges and islands. Each entry below lists what to arrange and what to check. Figures marked as listings come from operators and press, so confirm them. October to May is the usual rainy season, and the 2026-27 El Niño is forecast to bring heavy rain and landslides.
Village-to-village walking: the Quilotoa Loop
- Length: about 3 days.
- Altitude: the crater rim is about 3,900 m, so spend a few days acclimatising first.
- Money: no ATMs in Quilotoa village, so bring cash.
- Risk: heavy rain can trigger landslides, so check road and trail news each morning.
Cotopaxi guided climb
- Law: an accredited mountain guide is required. The FCDO says high mountaineering without one is illegal. Find guides through ASEGUIM .
- Gear: crampons and an ice axe are mandatory on a non-technical but glaciated route.
- Price: from about US$365 per person for shared two-day climbs, and US$700 to 765 or more with several operators.
- Access: climbers were allowed back on the volcano from November 2023. Check IG-EPN before booking.
- Base: the José F. Ribas refuge, about 4,800 m. Reported summit success is about 70 percent.
Galápagos cruise or island stay
- Getting there: flights from Quito or Guayaquil to Baltra or San Cristóbal. If you change planes at Guayaquil, ask the airline to keep you airside, because the UK advises against all but essential travel in Guayas.
- Fees: US$200 park fee over 12, US$20 Transit Control Card, mandatory health insurance, 60 days a year at most, 3 hours early at the airport. The CGREG page lists documents.
- Cost: short cruises from about US$2,000 per person, often a lot more.
- Safety: boat accidents have been recorded, so check life jackets and use a reputable operator.
Yasuní lodge stay
- Napo Wildlife Center: US$1,635 for three nights and US$2,000 for four, standard double.
- Sacha Lodge: US$2,290 for four nights, standard double.
- Check whether lodge rates are per person.
- Flight: LATAM Quito to Coca, US$256 return per person, then a motorised canoe.
- Advice: the FCDO tells Napo River travellers to use daylight, an official guide and an emergency plan.
Alausí overnight and Quito to Cuenca
Spend a night in Alausí or Riobamba around the Nariz del Diablo train, which runs Thursday to Sunday and costs US$30 plus VAT for foreign adults. For Quito to Cuenca, coaches take about 9 to 10 hours, so a flight is worth weighing, and night buses are best avoided.
Cuyabeno
The reserve is normally reached through Lago Agrio, which is in the FCDO border zone. The US rates Sucumbíos Level 3, so go only with an official guide, local advice and a backup plan.
