Multi-Night Trips from Tbilisi
Advisory, as of October 2026. British FCDO guidance is to avoid all travel to the Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and to make only essential trips close to their boundary lines. Demonstrations against the government have run for more than a year in the centre of Tbilisi, mainly outside the Parliament on Rustaveli Avenue, and have at times turned violent, most often on Saturday evenings and on political anniversaries. Stay away from them. Look at the current FCDO page on Georgia and at travel.state.gov before booking anything.
Tbilisi itself needs only a few days, so multi-day travel means heading out from the capital. This page lists four regional routes that are commonly combined with a stay in the city. Options are limited and each is a trip in its own right, so treat this as a starting outline. Operators, schedules and prices change, and none are listed here.
Wine country in Kakheti
Allow two or three nights in the Alazani Valley, east of Tbilisi. Telavi, once a royal capital, makes a base. Nearby are Tsinandali Estate, with its house museum and winery, Alaverdi Cathedral, where monks still make wine, and Gremi Fortress. Producers around Napareuli and Kvareli pour natural wines. Alaverdi is an active cathedral, so dress modestly there. Sighnaghi, about 110 km from the capital, is a shorter overnight alternative.
Mountains around Kazbegi
Two or three days works for Stepantsminda and the walk or 4x4 shuttle to Gergeti Trinity Church, with a hiking day from Juta village toward the Chaukhi massif. The Military Road crosses the Jvari (Cross) Pass at 2,379 m, and traffic can be halted there during avalanche risk, chiefly December to March. Look at road reports the same day. Mountain rescue may respond slowly, so hire a local guide for higher routes.
Svaneti
Svaneti takes four or five days, usually via Mestia and the UNESCO-listed village of Ushguli at about 2,200 m. The region is famous for medieval defensive towers. Roads approach from Zugdidi or Kutaisi. A flight to Mestia may or may not be running, so confirm it before depending on it, and build in slack for weather.
The south: Borjomi, Akhaltsikhe and Vardzia
A loop of two or three days connects the mineral spa town of Borjomi, the fortress of Rabati in Akhaltsikhe and Vardzia, the 12th-century cave monastery with 13 levels from the time of Tamar. Treat Vardzia as a monastic site, keep voices low and dress modestly.
What to check before leaving
- Read the FCDO safety guidance for the mountain regions.
- Keep to main roads and established sites, and never head toward a boundary line.
- Carry lari cash for villages and guesthouses.
- Ask your lodging about road conditions if travel falls between December and March.
If you want to compare lodging along these routes, start with Tbilisi stays and then narrow to a town.
