Overnights from Panama City: San Blas and Beyond
Most of Panama’s famous places are an early start away from the capital, and a night out turns a punishing day into a proper trip. These are the overnights that work from Panama City.
San Blas (Guna Yala): the island night
Day tours exist at $140 to $170, but they last about 14 hours with a 05:00 pickup, roughly three hours in a 4x4 to Carti and then a boat. A night on a cabana island changes the pace: hammocks, snorkelling, fresh fish and no crowds after the day boats leave. Bring cash, since there are no card machines, and carry your passport. Budget for an entry tax of $20 to $22 and a port fee of $2 to $5. There is no scuba. Read the country-level rules on Visit Panamá before booking.
Caribbean coast: Portobelo and Agua Clara
Spend a night near Portobelo to see Fort San Jerónimo and Fort San Lorenzo without a rush. Visit the Iglesia San Felipe for the Black Christ. The Agua Clara locks, open daily 08:00 to 17:00 for $5 to $10, fit the same route; details are at Visit Canal de Panamá . Do not wander around Colón’s city centre.
Highlands: Boquete
Flights from Albrook airport (PAC) to David take about 50 minutes, followed by a road transfer to Boquete. It is cool coffee country, and Geisha beans grown on volcanic soil are the local pride. Use Albrook, not Tocumen (PTY), which is the international airport.
Islands: Bocas del Toro
A 50-minute flight from Albrook reaches Isla Colón. Water taxis link the islands for beaches and snorkelling. Fares change by season, so check airlines.
Which one to pick
| Trip | Nights | Travel from city |
|---|---|---|
| San Blas | 1 or 2 | 2.5 to 3 hours by 4x4, then boat |
| Portobelo | 1 | 1.5 to 2 hours by road |
| Boquete | 2 to 3 | 50 minute flight plus road |
| Bocas del Toro | 3 | 50 minute flight plus boat |
Sample schedule
A four-night loop works well: one night in Panama City, two on San Blas islands, and a final night in the city before an international flight. Add Portobelo as a day on the way back if the 4x4 transfer leaves time.
Practical tips
- Pack light; Panama City hotels will store your big bag.
- Bring dollars in small bills and your passport on every trip.
- Plan one city night on each end of the trip for flights and early starts.
- For city time, see the three-day itinerary and compare tours on Viator .
Verdict: San Blas for one night is the best value; Bocas del Toro needs at least three.
