Panama City Day Trips for Wildlife, Forts, Islands
The easiest day trips from Panama City group into three themes: wildlife in the forest, history on the Caribbean coast, and the islands. Pick a theme and the logistics follow.
Wildlife and forest
Soberanía National Park and Gamboa (about 45 minutes). Pipeline Road is one of the great birding walks of the tropics, with trogons, motmots and puffbirds. Go at dawn. In Gamboa, boat trips on Gatún Lake visit islands where capuchin, howler and tamarin monkeys live, about $30 to $55 per person.
Emberá village on the Chagres River (about 1 hour). After a road transfer, a dugout canoe takes you upriver to a community that welcomes visitors with music, fried tilapia and plantain, and jagua dye body painting. Day trips run roughly $85 to $130.
Forts and history
Portobelo and Fort San Lorenzo (1.5 to 2 hours). Spanish coral-stone ramparts and cannons line the Caribbean coast. In Portobelo, the Iglesia San Felipe houses the Black Christ. A day tour costs about $90 to $140. Agua Clara locks lie on the same side, $5 to $10 and open daily 08:00 to 17:00; see Visit Canal de Panamá .
Islands
Taboga (30 minutes by ferry). Boats leave Fuerte Amador. The adult return fare is $24 and you need ID or a passport. The island has flower-lined lanes, a church founded in 1524 and a beach at Playa Restinga. See Taboga Express .
San Blas (Guna Yala). Day tours cost $140 to $170 for about 14 hours, with a 05:00 pickup, a 4x4 and a boat. It is possible, though tiring, and a night on the islands suits most travelers better. Bring cash and your passport.
Starting times
Birders leave by 06:00 for Soberanía, while the Taboga ferry suits a mid-morning start. Portobelo is a longer drive, so a 07:30 departure keeps you ahead of the afternoon heat. Pickups are usually from your hotel lobby, which means your hotel choice matters little.
