Panama City Family Days: Three Easy Plans
Families do best in Panama City with a simple rule: outdoors before noon, indoors during the afternoon showers. Here are three ready-made days, each with fees for children.
Plan one: canal and causeway
Morning. Miraflores Locks open at 08:00 daily. Child tickets for ages 6 to 12 cost $7.22, and under-6s are free; the adult top price is $17.22. The decks overlook ships squeezing into the chambers. Check ship times at Visit Canal de Panamá .
Afternoon. Rent a surrey bike on the Amador Causeway, about $10 to $15 an hour, for a flat ride beside the sea.
Plan two: forest and museum
Morning. The Metropolitan Natural Park has forest trails and a butterfly house. Foreign adults pay $4 and it opens 06:00 to 16:30.
Afternoon. The Biomuseo is open Tuesday to Friday 09:00 to 15:00 and Saturday and Sunday 10:00 to 15:00, and closed Mondays. Children aged 5 to 17 pay $12, under-5s are free and adults pay $20. See Biomuseo for current details.
Plan three: island beach day
Take the 30-minute ferry from Fuerte Amador to Taboga, $24 return for adults, with ID for every passenger. The island is car-free, with a calm beach at Playa Restinga and flower-lined streets. Bring sun hats and snacks. You can check ferry times at Taboga Express .
Wildlife add-on
Gatún Lake boat trips leave from Gamboa, about 45 minutes away, at roughly $30 to $45 per person. Capuchin monkeys and tamarins often come close to the shore. Ancón Hill is free, and sloths are common.
Eating with children
A fonda lunch of chicken sancocho, rice and plantain costs about $5 to $8 and arrives quickly, which suits restless children. Fruit shakes made with passion fruit or soursop run $1.50 to $2.50. Restaurants rarely mind a late lunch, so schedule the main meal after the morning outing rather than before.
Family tips
- Tap water is safe to drink.
- The Metro is clean and air-conditioned; Line 1 costs $0.35 and Line 2 costs $0.50 with a rechargeable card.
- Expect afternoon rain from May to December, and strong sun all year.
- In the evening, stay in the restored Casco Viejo core and use Uber for the trip back.
- Search family rooms on Booking.com .
For older children who like history, the attraction tours page lists guided options.
Verdict: plan one is the best first day, because it needs no booking and ends with the kids on bikes by the sea.
