Romantic Evenings in Shkodër: Lake and Castle
A slow weekend for two in Shkodër
This is a plan for a three-day couples’ stay built around evenings. Shkodër is a small, walkable city beside a large lake, with a castle on a rock and cafes along a pedestrian street. Costs are in Albanian lek (ALL), paid in cash.
Day 1: arrive and walk
Spend the late afternoon on Rozafa Castle. It stands about 130 m above the Buna and Drin rivers, and the view runs across the plain toward the lake. The ticket is about 400 ALL, and opening hours vary between listings, roughly 08:00 or 09:00 to 19:00 or 20:00 in summer and shorter in winter, so check the closing time. Read the castle’s Wikipedia page for background.
Come down for the xhiro, the evening walk on Rruga Kolë Idromeno, the pedestrian street. Take a table at a cafe and order an espresso or a Skënderbeu brandy.
Day 2: the lake
Take a taxi or ride a bike to Shiroka, 5 to 8 km from the centre. Dinner at Te Zyda (Rr. e Radovanëve) is simple, inexpensive and overlooks the water; ask for tavë krapi, the lake’s baked carp. See its listing .
Earlier in the day, hire a local captain for a slow boat ride from Shiroka or Zogaj, at about 1,500 to 3,000 ALL per boat. Zogaj, about 12 km from the centre, is an old fishing village. At first light a guided boat goes out from Zogaj to the rocks where Dalmatian pelicans rest.
Day 3: a scenic crossing
The Komani Lake ferry runs from Koman to Fierza through a narrow gorge. It leaves at 09:00 and takes about 2.5 hours. The fare is EUR 9 online or EUR 10 (1,000 ALL) in cash. The Shkodër shuttle to Koman leaves about 07:00. Only one ferry sails each way daily, so if you miss it the day is gone. See the ferry site . The season runs from April to early November.
If you stay in the mountains
Theth guesthouses take guests from mid-June to mid-September. Go to the Blue Eye of Theth early, arriving before 11:00 to beat the crowds. Its water is very cold.
For any mountain or ferry day:
- Ask your guesthouse the day before about the road and trails.
- Carry 2 litres of water and an offline map, and let your host know your plan.
- The Theth road has hairpins and no guardrails, so avoid driving it at night.
- On the northern border with Kosovo, stay on marked paths because mines remain. The UK safety advice has the detail.
