Shkodër Day Trips: Ferry, Beach and Fortresses
Where a day from Shkodër can take you
From Shkodër you can reach a mountain lake ferry, a long Alpine village, a dark-sand beach and two Ottoman and medieval landmarks, all in a day. Berat, Gjirokastër, Ksamil and the southern Riviera are hours away and need a night. Transport is by furgon (a minibus that leaves when full) or bus, and fares change, so ask at the stop.
Option 1: a day on Komani Lake
A typical schedule runs like this:
- About 07:00: shuttle from Shkodër to Koman, EUR 8.
- 09:00: ferry departs Koman for Fierza.
- About 11:30 to 12:00: arrive at Fierza.
- 13:00: ferry departs Fierza back to Koman, arriving about 15:30.
- 15:45: shuttle back to Shkodër, arriving about 18:00.
The one-way crossing takes about 2.5 hours. Fares are EUR 9 online and EUR 10 or 1,000 ALL in cash; a full-day package is EUR 25. The Fierza to Koman leg is the scenic one. The season runs from April to early November, so check the ferry site, which is komanilakeferry.com , for the current timetable.
If you add the Shala River boat from Koman (09:30, EUR 20 online or EUR 25 cash, about 4 hours at the river), start early and plan for a different ferry slot.
Option 2: Theth
Theth is a long day: about 2 hours each way. Shuttles leave Shkodër around 07:00 or 07:30 and return from Theth around 11:00 or 17:00, at about EUR 12 (1,200 ALL), from mid-May to early October. Find the Theth shuttle times on the ferry operator’s site.
Valbona is a separate matter. The journey takes 6 to 7 hours by shuttle, ferry and minibus, so treat it as an overnight stay and not a day trip.
Mountain safety
- Ask a guesthouse the day before about the road and trails.
- Start early, carry 2 litres of water and an offline map, and tell your host your plan.
- The road from Qafa e Thorës down to Theth is paved but has many hairpins and no guardrails; do not drive it at night. There is no fuel in Theth, so fill up at Koplik.
- Keep to marked paths close to the Kosovo border, where mines remain. Read the UK safety advice .
Option 3: Velipojë beach
The beach resort lies 22 to 31 km northwest, 30 to 45 minutes away, with furgons at about 200 ALL or EUR 2. Expect dark sand, pines and the Viluni lagoon. July and August are the busiest months.
Option 4: Mesi Bridge and Drisht Castle
Mesi Bridge over the Kir River is about 8 km by road from the centre. It was built from 1768 to 1770, is 108 m long and has 13 arches. Locals swim in the pools below in late spring and early summer, but the bed can run dry by late August. Drisht Castle, ancient Drivastum, is about 10 km from the city, above the Kir valley, and free to enter.
Option 5: Ulcinj in Montenegro
Ulcinj can be reached by the Muriqan or Sukobin border crossing. Take your passport and allow extra time at the border.
