Shkodër Multi-Day Trips: Alps Loop and Theth
Staying several nights from Shkodër
Four plans are workable: a loop through the Albanian Alps, a base in Theth, a pairing with Montenegro, and a slow stay in the city. The Alps are also known as the Accursed Mountains (Bjeshkët e Nemuna). No road links Theth and Valbona, and Shkodër has no regular passenger rail, so you rely on shuttles, a ferry and walking. Guesthouses quote euros, but cash in lek covers most extras.
Season and safety first
| Item | Season or rule |
|---|---|
| Theth to Valbona pass walk | June to mid or late September; snow can linger into late June; October is risky |
| Komani ferry | April to early November |
| Shkodër to Theth shuttle | mid-May to early October |
| Theth road at the pass | can close roughly November to May in snowy years |
- Check with your guesthouse the day before, start by 07:00 and cross the pass by about 14:00 to avoid afternoon storms.
- Carry 2 litres of water and an offline map, and tell your host your plan, because signal is patchy.
- Stay on marked paths near the Kosovo border, where unexploded mines remain. See the UK safety advice .
- On 27 May 2026 an operator still reported the classic Theth to Valbona trail as closed by snow, so early-season walkers should ask first. See the trail report .
Plan 1: Alps loop in 3 to 4 days
- Shuttle from Shkodër to Koman about 07:00 (EUR 8). Take the Berisha ferry at 09:00 to Fierza, then a minibus of about 1 hour to Valbona (about EUR 8, or a taxi near EUR 20). Sleep in Valbona.
- Walk Valbona to Theth, or the other way round. The route is about 14 to 17 km with about 900 to 1,050 m of climbing, over a pass near 1,795 m, in 6 to 9 hours, marked in red and white. See the hike notes .
- Take the shuttle from Theth to Shkodër at about 11:00 or 17:00.
Aggregators list a direct Valbona to Shkodër bus of about 4 hours, but ask locally before you rely on it.
Plan 2: Theth base for 2 nights
The paved road from Shkodër takes about 2 hours. Spend two nights to fit in the village church, the Lock-in Tower, the Grunas waterfall and the Blue Eye. Guesthouses are full from June to September, so book ahead. There is no ATM in Theth, so bring cash. Do not drive the hairpin descent at night.
Plan 3: Shkodër plus Montenegro
Combine a Shkodër base with Ulcinj and the Montenegrin side of Lake Skadar by bus. Check times and fares on the day, carry your passport and leave margin at the border.
Plan 4: the Peaks of the Balkans trail
This waymarked long-distance route runs through both Theth and Valbona. Ask an operator about snow before you commit to dates.
Plan 5: Shkodër itself for 2 to 3 nights
Fit in Rozafa Castle, the Marubi museum, the Lead Mosque, cycling to Shiroka and Zogaj, Mesi Bridge and a day on Velipojë beach. Look for rooms on Booking.com .
