Nelson Day Trips by Drive Time and Tide
Five outings work well as a single day from Nelson, and a few famous places do not. Distances are one thing and time on the road is another: Takaka Hill is slow, and the Abel Tasman coast runs on tide tables. Costs are NZD. Before you set off, open DOC track alerts and NZTA Journeys, because slips and flood repairs change road and track access.
Quick comparison
| Trip | Distance or time | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Abel Tasman via Kaiteriteri | About 60 km | Boats and beaches |
| Golden Bay | About 106 km to Takaka, 2 hours | Springs and surf beach |
| Nelson Lakes | St Arnaud, Lake Rotoiti | Mountain walks |
| Mapua Wharf and Rabbit Island | Half day | Food, ferry, cycling |
| Blenheim wine region | 1.5 to 2 hours each way | Wine and aircraft |
Abel Tasman via Kaiteriteri
The usual plan is a water taxi out and a walk back along a stretch of the Coast Track. From Anchorage to Bark Bay you have two options. The low-tide route across Torrent Bay is 8.4 km (about 3 hours). The high-tide track is 11.5 km (about 4 hours). Look up low tide before choosing. A boat day without walking costs from about 120. Walking in the park and park entry are free.
Golden Bay
Plan about 2 hours each way from Nelson to Takaka over Takaka Hill (SH60), which covers roughly 106 km. The 2025 floods damaged the road, and traffic management with a 30 km/h limit has been reported at Cooks Corner. Check NZTA Journeys the day before. Highlights are:
- Pupu Springs: a boardwalk loop around springs that are wahi tapu. DOC bans every kind of contact with the water. Some platform sections have no fence, and the water is cold and fast, so hold children’s hands.
- Wharariki Beach: a 20 minute farm walk from the road end to a beach with rips and no lifeguards. Swimming is not recommended, and seals need a 20 m gap.
- Farewell Spit: a tour of 6.5 to 7 hours that, added to the road, turns the outing into an overnight trip.
Nelson Lakes
The Mount Robert Circuit leaves from Mount Robert Road, 4.9 km from SH63 and 2 km west of St Arnaud. Allow 3 to 5 hours for the loop. Ice closes the gate. The park’s second lake is Rotoroa.
Mapua Wharf and Rabbit Island
Mapua Wharf has three places to eat or drink: Golden Bear Brewing, The Smokehouse and Rimu Grove Cellar Door and Wine Bar. The Mapua Ferry to Rabbit Island takes about 10 minutes and is for walkers and cyclists.
Blenheim
Marlborough’s wine country and the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre lie 1.5 to 2 hours away each way. Ask the centre for ticket prices before you go.
Trips that need more time
Kaikoura, the West Coast, Queenstown and Hanmer Springs are too far for a return trip in a day. Treat each as a stay of its own.
