Romantic Getaways in San Juan, Puerto Rico
Romance in San Juan happens mostly after the afternoon heat fades: a wall-side stroll at sunset, a cocktail, a late dinner and a night on the water. The ideas below are venues with published details. Listings of romantic hotels are outside this page, so use a booking site to pick an area. Prices are in US dollars, and Puerto Rico adds an 11.5% sales tax to many bills. Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November.
One evening, step by step
Late afternoon: Paseo de la Princesa. This free promenade of about 300 metres follows the south wall of Old San Juan and finishes at the Raíces Fountain by the Puerta de San Juan. It never closes, and artisan stalls are reported at weekends.
Early evening: a drink. La Factoría, 148 Calle San Sebastián, has been open since 2013 and spreads across six rooms, among them El Facto, Vino and La Cubanita. In 2026 it placed 26th on the North America’s 50 Best Bars list, as shown on The 50 Best . The same street hosts the San Sebastián festival each mid-January, when crowds are large.
Dinner. Marmalade at 317 Calle Fortaleza opens from 5 to 10pm every day and is listed as a tasting-menu restaurant, booked through OpenTable. Pricing is not published, so ask when reserving, using the Marmalade site . In Condado, the 1919 Restaurant at the Condado Vanderbilt is open Tuesday to Saturday, 5:30 to 10pm, with a formal dress code, and Ciarán Elliott leads the kitchen according to the hotel’s dining page .
A day activity for two
The Mixology Class at Casa Bacardí in Cataño lasts about 75 minutes and costs $80 per person plus tax. Guests must be 18 or older. Cross the harbour on the Cataño ferry from Pier 2 in Old San Juan, then take a taxi or shuttle.
Water at night
Laguna Grande, near Fajardo and roughly 1 to 1 hour 10 minutes from the capital, has guided kayak tours of about two hours from around $70 each. Swimming is not permitted. A longer trip to Vieques puts you at Mosquito Bay, which is reached by ferry from Ceiba or by small plane. It is best around the new moon and needs an overnight. Culebra, with its Flamenco Beach, is also reached from Ceiba and not from Fajardo.
Sand and surf
Condado and Ocean Park have dangerous rip currents. Visitors were swept out there in March and April 2026. Take your sunset walk on the sand if you like, but only swim at a beach with lifeguards on duty, such as Balneario de Escambrón, and obey the flags.
