San Juan Stays of Two to Four Nights
A stay of several nights in San Juan is easiest when the city is the base and the island is visited in loops. The only trips that truly need a night away are Culebra and Vieques. This page names no hotels. Find a room by neighbourhood on a booking site. All prices are US dollars and many have the 11.5% Puerto Rico sales tax added. Atlantic hurricane season lasts from 1 June to 30 November.
Two nights: the old city
Spend one day inside the walls. A single $10 pass admits ages 16 and over to El Morro and San Cristóbal for 24 hours, with younger children free, card payment only, from 9am to 5pm. Walk the Paseo de la Princesa along the south wall at the end of the day. Use day two for Casa Bacardí in Cataño, where tours start at $40 and require guests to be 18 or older, or for Museo de las Américas, which charges $8 for adults and is closed on Mondays.
Three or four nights: add the east
- El Yunque, about an hour away: the PR-191 corridor is free and unreserved. El Portal tickets are $8 for those 16 and over. La Mina Falls, the Big Tree Trail and the peak segment are closed.
- Laguna Grande, 1 to 1 hour 10 minutes away: a guided kayak tour of about two hours from around $70. No swimming is allowed. The tour is in the evening, so the drive home is late.
- Beach time: use a lifeguarded beach such as Balneario de Escambrón. Condado and Ocean Park have dangerous rip currents.
The park’s fees and hours page lists current closures at the forts. A fuller 4-day plan is also available.
Culebra for a night or two
The ferry terminal is at Ceiba, 75 to 90 minutes by road from San Juan, and not at Fajardo. An adult ticket is $2.25 each way for now, and a non-resident fare increase has been put off to 31 December 2026, so confirm on the ferry rates page . The earliest boat leaves at 3:30am and the crossing takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours. Weekend seats go early, and visitors cannot take cars aboard. The island is small enough to cover by rented golf cart or jeep. Cape Air flies the route in about 35 to 40 minutes.
Vieques for the bioluminescent bay
Mosquito Bay is reached from Ceiba by ferry at $2.00 each way or by light aircraft, and a night tour makes an overnight stay necessary. Only guided trips run, with no swimming and no motorised boats. The darkest skies come near the new moon, due on 9 November and 8 December in 2026.
The mountain loop
Toro Verde in Orocovis is 1 to 1.5 hours southwest, with its 1.57 mile Monster zip line at $114.99. Guavate, on PR-184 near Cayey, is known for roast pork, with crowds at weekends and many places closed midweek.
