A romantic day in Split, hour by hour

Split rewards couples who take it slowly. The palace is lively by mid-morning, so the most romantic stretches are early and late. This plan runs from a quiet morning stroll to a late glass of wine.

Morning: the Riva before the crowds

Walk the Riva promenade early with a coffee, then step through the Bronze Gate into the palace. The streets, gates, Peristyle and Vestibule are open at all hours and free to enter. Between about 10:00 and 15:00 in summer the old town fills up, so this early hour is the calm one.

Afternoon: Marjan

Climb the stairs from the Varoš quarter to Prva Vidilica, which takes about 10 to 15 minutes. From there you look over the town and the sea. The free observation tower at Sedlo, open daily from about 08:00 to 20:00, gives a higher view. The steps are polished stone, so wear shoes with grip. Pine forest covers the hill, and open flames are banned between 1 June and 31 October, so a picnic should be cold.

Evening: drinks on the Peristyle

Lvxor Kavana is a cafe-bar on the Peristyle where red cushions are spread across the old steps. Guides from Lonely Planet and Time Out mention live music in the evening. It is spelled Lvxor in listings. Hours depend on the season, so check on the day.

Late: two wine bars

Sailing boats with a skipper leave from Split harbour in the evening. Operators and prices differ, so compare listings and confirm the date and season.

Small details

  • Cover up between the beach and the palace, because walking through town in swimwear can earn a fine.
  • Check opening times for anything you plan in late October, which is outside the main season.
