Self-Guided Walks in Shkodër: Town, Castle, Hill
Three walks and a hike
Shkodër is flat and the main sights sit close together, so self-guided walking works well. Wear shoes with grip for cobbles, bring water, and keep lek in cash for museum desks and cafes. The routes below start from the centre.
Walk 1: the old-town stroll
- Begin at Sheshi Demokracia, Democracy Square.
- Follow the Pedonale, Rruga Kolë Idromeno, a pedestrian street with cafes and restored villas. The street is named after Kolë Idromeno, a painter, architect and photographer born in Shkodër.
- At number 32, visit the Marubi National Museum of Photography. It is open daily 09:00 to 19:00 per the official visit page , and adults pay 700 ALL in cash.
- Walk on to the Gjuhadol quarter, the historic Catholic district of stone houses, and the neighbouring Sarreq.
- End at St Stephen’s Cathedral and the Orthodox cathedral.
Walk 2: places of worship
Three buildings stand within about 10 minutes of each other: the Catholic cathedral, the Ebu Bekr Mosque and the Orthodox cathedral. Dress modestly, speak quietly and skip mosque visits during prayers. The Lead Mosque, built in 1773, is a little further and free to enter.
A short, solemn stop
On Bulevardi Skënderbeu 26 stands the Site of Witness and Memory, a museum in a former detention building with the original cells on the ground floor. Give it time and quiet. Listed hours are mornings (08:30 to 14:30, closed Sunday), so go early. The memory-site map describes it.
Walk 3: up to Rozafa Castle
The castle is on the same bank of the Buna as the old town, so no river crossing is needed. It is a walk of about 2 to 3 km along the road, then a cobbled approach to the gate. Use a map. The ticket is about 400 ALL in cash, and hours are roughly 08:00 or 09:00 to 19:00 or 20:00 in summer.
From the castle you can detour to the Old Buna Bridge, built about 1889 and open only to pedestrians since 2011. Check that it is open before you set out.
The Tarabosh hill hike
Shared routes show a 12 to 14 km round trip with 500 to 570 m of climbing, graded moderate. Starting points are Shiroka, Canaj or the castle. Bring water, start early and use an offline map.
Walking along the lake
A flat road runs from the city to Shiroka (5 to 8 km) and on to Zogaj (about 12 km from the centre). Walk part of it and take a taxi or furgon back for an easy half day.
