Shymkent Attraction Tours and Guided Visits
How Guided Visits Work Here
Shymkent has a small tour scene built around a few anchors: the old town complex, the Sayram shrines, long day tours to Turkistan and Otrar, and permit-based visits to the Aksu-Zhabagly reserve. Prices and inclusions vary, so ask each operator what is covered before paying.
Shymqala Old Town
The Shymqala complex stands on the old settlement mound at Aitek Bi 30/29. Guided tours of the Citadel hall, Forge hall and catacomb exhibition were quoted at 2,000 KZT in a 2023 listing, and an electric cart ride cost the same. Entry for foreign adults has been about 1,000 KZT, with residents paying about 500 KZT, and the visit takes two to three hours. The site has an observation deck and restored quarters. Parts of the complex show wear and some areas, such as the ethno-aul, may be closed, so ask at the desk which sections are open. Excavation layers date to the late 3rd and early 2nd century BC.
Sayram Pilgrim Sites
A guide for Sayram usually links four stops: the Ibrahim Ata Mausoleum, the Karashash Ana Mausoleum, the Mirali Baba mausoleum and the Khyzr minaret, built in the 18th to 19th century. Tradition links the first two to Yasawi’s father and mother. Sayram is in the eastern part of the city, about 10 km from the centre. Women and men should cover shoulders and knees. The Sayram Local History Museum on Ibrahim Ata Street, building 118/4, can be added.
One-Day Tours to Turkistan and Otrar
Operators combine the Yasawi Mausoleum in Turkistan with the Otrar ruins and the Arystan Bab shrine. The day lasts about 10 hours. Advantour quotes a private version from about US$110 each for four people, covering fees, guide and transport. Many listings leave site entry out, so read the small print. Bring your original passport for the ID check at the Turkistan precinct, where foreign visitors pay 5,000 KZT.
Red Bus Evening Ride
The double-decker Red Bus leaves from the Fantasy World park every day except Monday, with evening departures. It is a gentle way to see the lit streets.
Aksu-Zhabagly Reserve Visits
The reserve is a state nature reserve, not an open park. A permit and a reserve guide are required, and camping, fires and leaving trails are not permitted. Contact the administration on +7 72538 55510. Distance from the city is about 100 km, and a night in Zhabagly village is common. Wild tulips peak in late April and May.
