Shymkent Landmarks, Mosques and Museums
Start With the Old Town
Shymqala occupies the old settlement mound at Aitek Bi 30/29. Archaeologists dug down about 14 m and found ceramics from the late 3rd and early 2nd century BC, followed by Karakhanid, Timurid and Kokand layers. Visitors see the Citadel hall, a forge exhibition, a catacomb hall, an observation deck and restored quarters. Foreign adults have paid about 1,000 KZT. Some parts of the complex look worn, so ask which are open.
Squares and Monuments
Ordabasy Square is the ceremonial centre with the Zher-Ana (Mother Earth) stele. The Upper Bazaar lies next to it. Independence Park, created in 2011, connects to the square by a pedestrian bridge and features the Shanyrak monument and a large flagpole.
In the north, the Kazyna complex houses the Baidibek Bi monument, 23 m tall with its pedestal and opened in autumn 2012. A miniature alley there shows regional monuments.
Places of Worship
The Koshkar-Ata Mosque, built in the 1850s, survives from the 19th century, and the Jami Mosque is the oldest in the city. Ak Meshit, the Central Mosque, was completed in 2013, while the Seitzhan Kari Eszhanuly Mosque, which opened in 2024 in Nursat, is the largest. Visitors should dress modestly. Churches include St Nicholas Cathedral and a Catholic shrine to St Therese.
Museums
Wikivoyage lists the Turkistan Region museum at Baidibek Bi Avenue 115a and the Art Museum at Madeli Kozha 2B, both 09:00 to 18:00. The Retro Garage has classic cars from the 1930s to the 1970s. Kyluet is an underground ethnomuseum for which you should phone ahead. The Erlik museum in Victory Park covers the Second World War and the Soviet-Afghan War.
Remembrance
The Museum of Victims of Political Repression, at Ryskulbekov Street 14A, records the repressions of the 1930s. The nearby Kasiret memorial marks an execution site, with commemoration on 31 May. Approach both quietly.
Everyday Landmarks
Look for Soviet mosaics at Kazybek Bi 40, Zhangeldin 17 and Kabanbay Batyr 12. The Russian Drama Theatre, founded in 1929, stands at Al-Farabi Square 4/2, and the Opera and Ballet Theatre and a puppet theatre in a former church complete the cultural scene.
