Waitomo Day Trip Ideas and Nearby Stops
Reaching Waitomo
Waitomo lies off State Highway 37, which leaves State Highway 3 near Hangatiki, between Otorohanga and Te Kuiti. Approximate road distances:
- Hamilton is 70 to 75 km away, roughly an hour’s drive.
- Auckland is 190 to 200 km away, a drive of 2.5 to 3 hours.
- Rotorua is about 150 km away, around 2 hours by road.
- Te Kuiti is about 18 km away, a quarter of an hour or a little more.
- Otorohanga is about 20 km away, 20 to 25 minutes by road.
InterCity’s Auckland service leaves from SkyCity on Hobson Street and arrives at the Waitomo Caves i-SITE after about 3 hours 40 minutes. Look at the timetable for a return departure before planning a bus-only day. InterCity also offers a Hobbiton and Waitomo day tour from Auckland or Rotorua, with listings from roughly $380 to $440. Hobbiton, at Matamata, is about 100 km and 1.5 hours from the caves.
Planning the caves
Pick the cave slot first. The Glowworm Cave takes 45 minutes, Ruakuri about 2 hours, and the Glowworm plus Ruakuri combo starts at $179 adult and $80 child. Check in 30 minutes early. Rates are NZD from 2026 operator sites, so confirm before you pay.
Nearby stops
- Otorohanga Kiwi House (about 20 minutes): open daily 9am to 5pm and closed 25 December. Adults 16 and over pay $29.50, children 5 to 15 pay $13.50, under-5s are free, and a family of 2 adults and 3 children pays $75. Keeper talks at 10:30am and 1:30pm come with entry.
- Kawhia Ocean Beach (over an hour): a hot water beach. Dig into the sand within about 2 hours of low tide, either side, and carry a spade.
- Marokopa and Kiritehere Beach (about 45 minutes): Triassic shell beds, with a fossil platform roughly 1 km from the car park.
- Pureora Forest and the Timber Trail: an 85 km cycling Great Ride from Pureora to Ongarue, which suits an overnight more than a detour.
- Te Anga Road: the route west to Piripiri Cave, Marokopa Falls and Mangapohue Natural Bridge. Piripiri Cave is free, with a 5-minute walk and steps, and needs a torch. Marokopa Falls drops 35 m beside a short, easy track. Check the DOC page for Mangapohue before you drive out to it.
Road conditions
Te Anga Road is narrow, winding and prone to slips. A major flood in October 2025 cut roads between Waitomo and Marokopa, so read operator and council notices first. Nothing sells fuel west of Waitomo, so fill up in Otorohanga, Piopio or Te Kuiti.
