Short Walks Around Waitomo Village and Ruakuri
Walking here means short tracks
The walks around Waitomo are brief and self-guided, and none is a day hike. Most are free DOC tracks. For a guided walk underground, see Waitomo attraction tours .
Ruakuri Walk
The track starts about 4 km from the village and loops beside Waitomo Stream to a viewing platform at Ruakuri Natural Bridge. Allow roughly 1 km and 45 minutes. Stairs are many and the surface is steep and slippery, so good mobility is needed. Take a torch, because the entrance to the platform is dark. Glowworms appear at night, best beside the main bridge. Mountain bikes are banned.
Waitomo Walkway
This walkway is about 3.3 km one way, signed at 1 hour 15 minutes. DOC’s blog says walkers often take twice as long. It begins opposite the Waitomo Caves Museum and ends at Ruakuri Scenic Reserve, and it forms a section of Te Araroa.
- Private land: follow the markers and watch for electric fences.
- Flooding: the track can go under water after heavy rain.
- Tomo: a netted vertical shaft stands at the end of a bridge. Keep to the marked track.
- Supplies: the village has a small general store. No fuel is sold west of Waitomo.
Walks along Te Anga Road
- Piripiri Cave, 28 to 29 km west: free, a 5-minute walk and steps, torch needed. Layers of giant oyster fossils lie toward the back.
- Marokopa Falls, 30 to 31 km west: 35 m falls on a short, easy track of about 20 to 30 minutes return.
- Mangapohue Natural Bridge, about 25 km west: a 17 m arch. Look at the DOC page for the current state of the track before you drive out.
Te Anga Road is narrow and winding. A major flood in October 2025 cut roads between Waitomo and Marokopa, so read operator and council notices first.
Limestone hazards
Streams here vanish underground, and ferns or farm grass can hide tomos, which are vertical shafts. Stay on marked tracks, and enter caves only with a licensed guide.
Cave tours on foot
Cave tours are the closest thing to guided walking. The Waitomo Glowworm Cave tour lasts 45 minutes and ends with a boat ride, from $85 adult and $39 child, with no photography. Ruakuri Cave takes about 2 hours and suits wheelchairs and pushchairs, from $122 adult and $46 child. Dollar figures are NZD from 2026 operator sites, so confirm the rate with the operator. Arrive 30 minutes before departure.
