Nelson Sightseeing: Cathedral, Gallery and Coast
Nelson’s sights split into two groups: a compact set in the middle of town, and a handful of coastal and Golden Bay stops that need a car. Costs are NZD. For anything beyond the city, check DOC alerts and NZTA Journeys, since weather and slips can close tracks and roads.

A viewpoint walk
Centre of New Zealand on Botanical Hill is a survey marker, not the geographic middle of the country. John Spence Browning, Nelson’s Chief Surveyor in the 1870s, used the hill as a central reference for the first national geodetic survey. The walk starts at Botanical Reserve over the Maitai River, and the council’s estimate to reach the top is 20 to 60 minutes. You can park on Hardy Street.
Outside the centre
- Founders Heritage Park, 87 Atawhai Drive, is a historic village open 10:00 to 16:30 daily, closed on Good Friday and Christmas Day. Entry is about 12.10 for adults and 5.20 for children aged 5 to 16. The train is out of service, so there are no rides.
- Nelson Classic Car Museum, 1 Cadillac Way, is open daily 10:00 to 16:00 and costs 20 for an adult.
- Boulder Bank has an 1862 cast-iron lighthouse, the second permanent lighthouse built in New Zealand. Heritage NZ lists the lighthouse as closed to the public, so enjoy it from the Haven. The Bank walk is about 8 km and takes 2 to 3 hours one way. From 15 August to the end of February dogs are banned for the 4 km nearest The Cut, because little penguins, dotterels and terns nest there.
Golden Bay stops
Te Waikoropupu (Pupu) Springs lie near Takaka, a drive of about 2 hours over Takaka Hill. A boardwalk loop runs around the springs. They are wahi tapu, and DOC closes the water to touching, wading, swimming and fishing.
Wharariki Beach is a 20 minute walk across farmland from the end of Wharariki Road. Currents and rips are strong, and there are no lifeguards. Seals rest on the beach, and the law requires you to stay 20 m away.
