Nelson for Couples: Cellar Doors and Coast
Couples tend to enjoy Nelson for slow days: a cellar door lunch, a harbourside dinner, a wharf drink at Mapua and a boat day on the Abel Tasman coast. Hours and menus change through the year, so book tables and phone cellar doors before you head out. Costs are in NZD.
A romantic day, in order
Morning: cellar doors in Upper Moutere. Neudorf Vineyards sits at 138 Neudorf Road (phone 03 543 2643) and generally opens around 11:00 to 17:00 in season, with tastings from about 35. Gravity Winery and Cellar Door at 243 Old Coach Road pours several labels. Its hours are given as Wednesday to Sunday 11:00 to 16:00 or daily 11:00 to 17:00, so a call settles it.
Afternoon: Abel Tasman by water. Sail with Abel Tasman Sailing Adventures from Kaiteriteri on a day trip priced from about 98 to 190, or paddle with Wilsons on the Split Apple Kayak outing to Split Apple Rock, from about 105. A water taxi to Anchorage or Bark Bay gives you sand, a picnic and a short stroll. Check the tide table if you plan to cross Torrent Bay or Bark Bay on foot.
Evening: dinner. Two good choices are in the city.
- The Boat Shed Cafe, 350 Wakefield Quay, faces Nelson Haven. Doors open at 11:30 Monday to Friday and at 9:00 on weekends. The kitchen cooks a seasonal New Zealand menu, plus a “Trust the Chef” format of four or five courses. Reserve ahead.
- Hopgood’s & Co, 284 Trafalgar Street, is a fine-dining room in the 2026 Cuisine Good Food Guide. One 2026 guide lists Tuesday to Saturday from 17:30, mains at 42 to 52 and a tasting menu at 135. Phone to check the current format.
A different evening: Mapua Wharf
At Mapua Wharf you can pair a glass at Rimu Grove Cellar Door and Wine Bar (Shed 4, 6 Aranui Road) with a beer from Golden Bear Brewing at the same address and a meal at The Smokehouse. A short ferry from the wharf reaches Rabbit Island in about 10 minutes.
Beach and walk
Cable Bay, around 21 km from Nelson, has a beach and a walkway to stroll together. Take your own picnic. The track shuts for lambing from 1 August to 7 October, in high fire risk and after dark.
Places to admire but not swim
Three scenic spots are poor choices for a romantic dip:
- Pupu Springs near Takaka, where DOC closes the water to every kind of contact.
- Blue Lake in Nelson Lakes, where DOC requests that visitors neither wash nor swim.
- Wharariki Beach, where rips are strong and there are no lifeguards.
Look, photograph and keep your feet dry.
Planning tip
Weather and slips can block the road to Golden Bay and some park tracks. Check DOC alerts and NZTA Journeys before you commit to a day out.
