Vancouver on a budget: what’s actually free

Vancouver’s most recommended sights cost nothing. The Stanley Park seawall, English Bay at sunset, Gastown’s cobblestone streets and a wander through Granville Island Public Market are all free, and the free Lynn Canyon suspension bridge delivers most of what the CAD 79.95 Capilano Suspension Bridge does for CAD 0. The real budget traps are the North Shore’s other paid attractions and the Museum of Anthropology’s regular daytime ticket, both of which have a genuine cheap workaround below.

Stanley Park itself is 405 hectares of free forest and beach; the seawall loop runs about 9km (5.5 miles), 2 to 2.5 hours walking or 45 to 60 minutes cycling. Granville Island’s Public Market charges nothing to enter, you only pay per vendor, and the Aquabus over from downtown runs roughly CAD 4 to 6 one way, the cheapest scenic ride in the city.

Is Capilano Suspension Bridge worth the CAD 79.95 ticket?

Only if you want the Treetops Adventure and Cliffwalk extras, the two things Lynn Canyon doesn’t have. For the suspension bridge experience itself, walking above a canyon and rainforest, Lynn Canyon Park delivers it for free, with shorter lines and real hiking trails beyond the bridge. Save the CAD 79.95 for Grouse Mountain instead, or skip both and stay free.

Is the Museum of Anthropology still closed for renovation?

No. It reopened 13 June 2024 after an 18-month seismic upgrade to the Great Hall, and by now has been fully open for more than two years. Regular adult admission is CAD 26, dropping to CAD 13 every Thursday from 5pm until the 9pm closing, the single best value ticket in the city.

How much does a day in Vancouver cost on a budget?

A CAD 11.50 TransLink DayPass, a CAD 12 to 20 casual lunch, a CAD 20 to 35 dinner and a morning of free sightseeing puts a full day at roughly CAD 45 to 70 (USD 33 to 51), excluding lodging. Add the Museum of Anthropology on a regular afternoon and it climbs to CAD 70 to 95 (USD 51 to 69); time it for Thursday after 5pm and it stays closer to CAD 60 to 80 (USD 44 to 58).

Getting around cheap without a car

TransLink’s zone fares run CAD 2.85 for one zone up to CAD 5.40 for three, with a CAD 11.50 DayPass that pays for itself after three rides, useful on any day that crosses downtown, UBC and the North Shore. The one fare that catches visitors out is the airport trip: a Canada Line ride from YVR costs the standard CAD 2.85 zone fare plus a separate CAD 6.50 YVR AddFare, about CAD 9.35 total, not a flat fare. That AddFare only applies leaving the airport; the return trip back to YVR doesn’t carry it. Check current fares on TransLink before you travel, they typically move on 1 July each year.
