Am I flying into the right Vancouver?
Almost certainly, but it’s worth a check: YVR serves Vancouver, British Columbia, on Canada’s Pacific coast, not Vancouver, Washington, a separate and much smaller US city near Portland, Oregon. The two share a name from the same 18th-century explorer, nothing else; different country, different currency, no shared transit or ferry links.
Day 1: Richmond and Steveston, the arrival day
Land at YVR and tap onto the Canada Line, roughly CAD 9.35 total including the CAD 6.50 YVR AddFare that applies to any trip starting at YVR-Airport station, downtown-bound or not. Richmond’s dim sum, at the Public Market or Aberdeen Centre, is widely rated cheaper and better than downtown Chinatown’s, roughly CAD 15-25 per person before GST (5%) and BC’s PST (7%) get added at the till, close to 12% combined. Steveston’s fishing harbour and the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site round out a free waterfront walk before heading downtown for a Gastown evening.
Day 2: The North Shore, free if you pick right
SeaBus across Burrard Inlet, about 12 minutes for the same zone fare as the SkyTrain, to Lonsdale Quay, then a bus to Lynn Canyon Park for its free 1912 suspension bridge and rainforest trails. Capilano runs roughly CAD 79.95 at the gate for a longer bridge plus the Treetops Adventure and Cliffwalk extras; book through capbridge.com ahead of a summer visit for close to 10% off. Dinner off Gastown’s main strip runs CAD 20-35 per person.
Day 3: Squamish and the Sea to Sky Gondola
Highway 99 is the only route to Squamish; no passenger rail runs this corridor, or the rest of the Sea-to-Sky Highway toward Whistler beyond it. It’s about 60km and 45-60 minutes from downtown by rental car, shuttle, or tour. Ride the Sea to Sky Gondola for CAD 62-76 booked online, cheaper than the gate price. Shannon Falls and the Stawamus Chief trailhead are free stops on the same stretch of highway for anyone who would rather earn a view on foot.
Do I need a car to reach Squamish?
Some way to drive, yes, whether that’s your own rental, a shuttle seat, or a booked tour; Squamish has no direct transit link from downtown Vancouver. Splitting a rental car three or four ways usually beats a solo shuttle fare, and the same car covers Day 2’s North Shore driving if you’d rather skip the SeaBus.

Richmond dim sum, the free Lynn Canyon bridge, and an online-booked Sea to Sky Gondola ticket keep this trip under roughly CAD 200 per person outside lodging. Swap in Capilano and the gate-price gondola ticket, and the same three days run closer to CAD 350. For Victoria and the Rockies-bound context beyond it, the 4-day version adds both.
